First Look: Shonda Rhimes’ New Series, The Catch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Shonda Rhimes, who is the driving force behind Thursday night drama on ABC, welcomes her fourth show, The Catch, to Shondaland. The new series follows Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos, The Killing), a fraud investigator, who runs into a case that involves her husband (Peter Krause, Parenthood), who happens to be a wanted con man. Vaughan is determined to solve the mystery and save her career…maybe more so than her marriage. (Yikes.)

After seeing a promo for the show during an episode of How To Get Away With Murder or HGTAWM, I didn’t immediately catch the plot. However, the level of suspense and seduction could be spotted from a distance. To get a better sense of the show, I watched and dissected the latest trailer via YouTube, and there’s more that can be said for the Shondaland freshman.

Rhimes, as an executive producer, and her team have taken and applied elements from existing shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Most notable is a strong and studious female lead. The recipe for drama is complete with secrets, sex, and scandals. The show has it all, but will it catch on (for everyone)?

Last year, news broke out that the show’s creator Jennifer Shurr and co-showrunner had left the project due to differences over the show’s direction. Entertainment Weekly spoke with the leader of Thursday Night TV asking Rhimes about the management of her “production empire” and the show’s future. The Shondaland team recently handed the reins of showrunner to Scandal veteran Allan Heinburg, hoping to keep the show closely aligned with the energy of other three prime-time dramas.

To increase the level of attraction, the Shondaland team decided to replace the originally casted husband Damon Dayoub with a more recognizable actor such as Krause. They say change is good, but how much is too much? The answer lies with the viewers.

The pilot airs this Thursday, March 24 at 10 p.m., taking the slot of HTGAWM, which has been renewed for a third season, according to the show’s Instagram.
