Dreading the treadmill? Here are some fun ways to keep fit outside and avoid FitRec for a little while longer.
1. Stadium Stairs:
Harvard Stadium is a perfect place for climbing stairs! Start at one end of the horseshoe and try running the stairs all the way around. It takes about 45 minutes and you have yourself a great cardio workout! It is about a two-mile walk over to Harvard or you can hop on the #66 T-bus at the corner of Harvard Ave. and Commonwealth Ave.
2. Charles River Run:
You always say you’re going to do it so why not? There is no better time to run along the Charles than in the fall. With all the sailboats and rowers out on the water, there are plenty of cool sights to keep your mind off the fact that you are actually working out. And you won’t want to miss a close up view of the leaves changing colors!
3. Tour de Newbury:
Tempted to ride one of the new ‘Hubway’ bikes but nowhere to go? Pick one up outside of FitRec and take it for a brisk ride down to Newbury Street and around the Boston Commons. If you ride for 30 minutes (an ideal time for cardio work) or less, it’s totally free! At the end of your workout, drop off the bike on the corner of Hereford Street and reward yourself with some window-shopping on Newbury!
4. Frisbee in the Fens:
With varsity, club, and intramural teams taking over Nickerson Field all day, it’s hard to find space to play sports just for fun. The park in the Fens is about a 15-minute walk from South Campus (just past the Regal movie theater) and has basketball courts, baseball fields, a track and a turf soccer field. The lights stay on until 11pm so grab some friends and head over to the Fens!
5. BU Beach Body:
Have a yoga mat (or a beach towel)? Take advantage of the luscious grass at the BU beach to do your plyometric exercises. Alternate between lunges, planks, push-ups, and crunches. Mix it up with anything you like!
And be sure to dress in layers, so you can remove the extra clothes as you warm up. Give it a shot! FitRec can wait!
