Emma Off The Record: Good to be Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Annnnnd we’re back! Nerdy as it may sound, I am SO glad to be back in school. Winter break was nice and all, but I crave structure, and too much free time really gets to my head. Stepping back onto campus with my freshly rested brain felt like a huge sigh of relief. I had quite a hectic fall semester so I purposefully designed my schedule for the spring to be a bit easier going (a.k.a. no classes on Mondays or Fridays). It took some finessing but I managed to make things work in terms of classes, as well as another situation that was causing a bit of stress last semester: my living situation. I bounced between dorms until I finally was presented a golden opportunity to live in a sweet apartment in South Campus. The only catch was I had to wait till spring to snag the spot. I can officially confirm that it was worth the wait.

While everything might sound fine and dandy, I promise you that the stress from last semester still lingers. Maybe it’s just my cynical nature, but I am slightly afraid that something is going to fall through the cracks. I have a job, classes, Her Campus, two radio shows, seemingly endless internship applications, and I’m trying to work out at least twice a week. Oh, and I have to cook for myself, too. I know, I know these are only good things, but I see this as a sort of “adulting test run.” I figure that if I am able to pull this off, I might just be able to survive in the real world. Taking out the trash, scrubbing the stove, and budgeting for market runs ain’t got nothing on me!!

I hope I really get to flex my independence muscles this semester since I’m also mentally preparing myself to live abroad next fall. Going from the humble dorm life where I never had to worry about toilet paper running out, to a full-blown apartment that I’m partially responsible for, to living in a different country for six months is pretty mind-blowing stuff. I am so unbelievably excited, but I’m also slightly nervous to move to London which has always been one of my dream cities to live in. But that’s future stuff. Right now I’m focusing on this semester and all the usual priorities of college life: keeping up with classes, maintaining relationships, and generally embracing the moment.

Every semester I’ve been at BU so far I have made a playlist that encapsulates the music that spoke to me in that particular time in my life. I’m sharing my fssy (which stands for first semester sophomore year) playlist with all of you because who doesn’t love a bit of nostalgia? I was listening to a lot of artists I’ve had on my rotation for a while like Steve Lacy, Rex Orange County, and Snoh Aalegra. I included songs by them with lyrics that really put me in the feels like “N Side,” “Pluto Projector,” and “I Want You Around” which are all about being in love but come from all sides of a relationship. I was also listening to Omar Apollo, Gus Dapperton, and Yellow Days who are all artists I had on repeat. This playlist got me through a lot of long nights, breakdowns, and managed to cheer me up even in my lowest moments.

Now more than ever I have been reminding myself how lucky I am to be living this good life surrounded by so many incredible people, places, and things. My family, friends, and boyfriend are the people I rely on to keep me sane, and I’m fortunate for every one of them. It sounds pretty cheesy but college really is one of the most unique, zany, and wonderful experiences I have had so far and I’m not even halfway done yet!

This semester is going to have its ups and downs, but I’m ready for the ride because I can’t wait to see what’s in store.
