The Best of Comm Ave: Crispy Crepes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I would not go so far to call myself a crepe connoisseur, but I do like a good sweet or savory crepe at any time of day. After walking by Crispy Crepes Cafe several times a day, let alone a week or month, my friend and I decided to walk in one day and give it a try.

Gabby Borges and I started talking the weekend after the first round of early decision acceptances came out. Since then, we hang out often since we live in the same dorm and make fairly impulsive decisions about what we’re going to do on the nights we’re hanging out. After all, the city of Boston makes maintaining that nonchalant attitude very easy with lots of public transport and high accessibility from just walking around.

Last Wednesday night, we were both hanging out in her dorm room. Both of us had empty stomachs and were looking for somewhere to eat. The North End came to mind; however, waiting for the T is a bit of a pain, especially with the cold and rainy weather Boston has been getting for the past few days. On a whim, we both settled on Crispy Cakes Cafe, and the conversation went a bit like “what about that crepe place?” “oh crispy crepes, yeah” “yeah, let’s go there” “alright, let’s go”. Exemplifying how the lack of planning that goes into our little dinner dates is unbelievable.

We turned up at the front door of Crispy Crepes Cafe a mere couple of minutes later and headed inside. It was rather empty in there when we walked in—only a few other people were eating there at the time or were picking up their food to go. We ordered a strawberry lemon crepe and a banana Nutella crepe and chose to eat in because the cafe was a little bigger than either of our dorm rooms. The pricing was super reasonable, and the crepes were both finished and plated remarkable quickly, especially considering how there was only one man taking all of the orders himself.

The crepe itself was also impeccable: I can speak for my own when I say this, but it was absolutely loaded with strawberries. It was almost like the owner of the cafe knew that I haven’t had a strawberry in months, because our dining halls never seems to have any fruit other than melon (which I don’t care for). I certainly enjoyed my crispy strawberry and lemon crepe and it was very obvious that Gabby loved hers as well. She seemed to like it so much that she even suggested I write my next Her Campus article about said crepe cafe shortly after seeing a Boston Globe article on the wall. While I’m not quite The Boston Globe, who am I to let Gabby and this wonderful crepe shop down?

All in all, I loved my crepe but I also loved the experience I got to have with my friend of nearly one year now. The people you meet at this school are really special, and college life is really about finding your crowd you can go and eat crepes with at 9 pm on a Wednesday night. Nights like this, chilling in your dorm and then going out for casual dinner, are really the best of your lives so make sure to cherish them and spend time with people you want to go on casual “dates” with. I hope you like this article Gabby, and to many more years of friendship after this one.
