A Beginner’s Guide to Crystal Healing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Over quarantine in 2020, I discovered the world of crystals. Granted, it was an incredibly stressful time and I found a lot of peace in connecting with my inner self and higher energies through the help of crystals.

What are Crystals?

Crystals are semi precious stones that form from minerals in the Earth. They have been traditionally used in Hinduism and Buddhism, but many people who do not practice these religions have begun to use them in practice as well. Crystals can be used to heal, relieve stress, and protect. Here are some of my favorite crystals and their usages:

Amethyst

Amethyst is a purple stone and you can purchase it at most metaphysical stores. It can be used for spiritual protection, healing, and purifying. I like to keep a piece of amethyst next to my bed or under my pillow to protect my unconscious mind from negative thoughts while I’m asleep. Amethyst connects to your crown chakra which so you can persevere past any blocks within your mind.

Clear Quartz

Clear quartz is a transparent stone that can be found at most metaphysical stores. It is considered the “master healing” crystal as it absorbs, stores, and releases energy. Clear quartz geodes can also be used to cleanse other crystals by placing them inside the geode. I like keeping a piece of clear quartz in the center of my other crystals to keep their energies charged and pure.

Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a pink stone that can be found at most metaphysical stores. It is connected to your heart chakra and is known to promote gentleness, love, and fertility. Many people wear rose quartz as a necklace close to their heart in order to heal their heart chakra. I like to keep a piece of rose quartz with me whenever I spend time with my significant other.

Malachite

Malachite is a beautiful deep green stone with green bands around it. While it is sometimes harder to find in stores, it can be bought online at reputable stores. To make sure it is authentic, observe the bands and see if they are uniform. If they are uniform, it is not authentic. Malachite can be used for balance, good luck, and manifestation. When manifesting with this stone, set your intentions and hold it in your hand to increase your energy.

Tiger’s Eye

Tiger’s eye is a brown stone with beautiful yellow bands around it. The tiger’s eye is connected to the solar plexus chakra and helps keep you grounded even in a time of chaos. This crystal is known for helping release anxiety and fear, as well as resolving conflict. I like using tiger’s eye when meditating to release any stress from my day.

If you’re interested in learning more about crystals there’s a whole world to explore. I particularly enjoyed the book Crystals for Beginners by Karen Frazier. My one takeaway from this article is that crystals are what you make of them. If you only see your crystal as a plain old rock, it will act as one. However, if you believe in your crystal and use it to your advantage, you will definitely see changes in your mindset and everyday life.
