Battle of the Beauty Brands: Celebrity Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

It seems like almost every day now our favorite celebs are launching beauty lines with amazing collections of lipsticks, highlighters, foundations, and eye shadows. How is a college makeup lover on a budget to know where to spend their hard earned cash? I’ve compiled some information on a few famous beauty launches by some of our favorite actresses, singers, and fashion mavens to give you guys a sense of what collection might work best for your desired look and price point.

First of all, we have to talk about one of the beauty world’s the most recent launches: Fenty Beauty. This brand, helmed by fashion chameleon, beauty rule breaker, and talented singer Rihanna, is this season’s most talked about launch. Her brand’s focus is “Beauty For All,” as Rihanna wanted to make a line that was inclusive to “all skin colors, all undertones, from all countries.”

She created 40 shades of foundation, skin sticks in 30 shades in a variety of finishes, highlighter duos, as well as a universally flattering lip gloss. The aesthetic of this brand is very in line with Rihanna’s effortlessly cool look, as the packaging sports sleek neutral colors. The price point is definitely in line with products found at Sephora; it’s definitely on the higher end side, but nothing outrageous. If you value diversity and inclusivity, dig a more natural look, and lean a bit toward the edgier side, then this brand is definitely for you!

Moving on to a less recent but certainly just as talked about line, we come to the eponymous Kylie Cosmetics Brand. This line is all about the hype; often sold out and highly coveted, the products you purchase aren’t simply lip kits or highlighters, but rather trophies. The aforementioned lip kits are by far her most popular product. They come in a variety of on-trend shades and finishes, and come with a matching lip liner as well. Boasting a price point of $29.00 for two products, it’s a pretty good deal. She also has a range of highlighters and blushes, as well as three eyeshadow palettes outside of her limited editions collections. On trend as always, her palettes are full of shades that are certainly having a moment right now: warm peaches, burgundies, and bronzes.

However, be warned that Kylie’s products are created by Spatz Labs, who is also the lab behind the brand Colourpop. However, Colourpop and Kylie Cosmetics have drastically different price points. A matte liquid lip and a lippie pencil cost $6 and $5 respectively as compared to Kylie’s $30. So, in essence, you pay for the name; which is great if that’s what you’re looking for!  If you love your looks to be ultra glam and totally trendy, then this brand is definitely for you.

Third, I’m going to talk about a brand that, as opposed to Kylie’s, I haven’t heard too much about: Juice Beauty. Juice Beauty, helmed by Gwyneth Paltrow, is marketed as an organic, all natural brand. With a tagline of, “The organic solution,” you know this brand is going to have only the most natural and highest quality ingredients. I think this idea of good-for-you makeup is encapsulated by the Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum Foundation, which is described on Juice Beauty’s website as a “skin perfecting foundation and age-defying serum in one with concentrated plant-derived Phyto-Pigments.”

Juice beauty also carries just straight-up skincare products, so you can choose to buy from the skincare line, the makeup line, or both! It seems to be a one stop shop for natural, organic, clean, and clinically verified products. If being good to your body and good to the environment is something that is important to you, you should definitely check out this brand!

Lastly, we’re going to go to the opposite end of the pricing spectrum and look at FLOWER Beauty, created by Drew Barrymore. FLOWER Beauty’s message is all about empowering the woman. They describe themselves as “the brainchild and mission of Drew Barrymore and her straightforward, no-nonsense philosophy of empowerment: that women everywhere deserve the best quality, most efficacious products at an affordable price.”

And they really stay true to the “affordable price” component, as none of her products cost more than $15 dollars. Some of her most popular products are the cheek products, including some beautiful blushes and highlight trios. If you’re hoping to amp up your blush and highlight game, check out the Shimmer and Strobe Pallet or the Flower Pots Powder Blush. If you want celebrity endorsed, quality makeup but aren’t willing to spend big bucks for it, this brand’s got you covered!

Hopefully, this compilation gave you some sense of what lines or products might interest you. If you think I missed any important brands that you want me to review, let me know! Also, if any of you have already tried out these collections, be sure to share what worked and what didn’t!
