When we’re younger, birthdays feel magical. You are surrounded by decorations, presents, friends, and family singing “Happy Birthday” (usually off-key) while you blow out candles. For one day, everything revolves around you.
In college, it’s different. You wake up to 6 a.m. alarms, a hundred assignments, and the realization that your birthday falls on the same day as your midterm. Unfortunately, no one cancels class because you’re turning 19. The day just keeps moving, and that’s when the birthday blues strike.
College birthdays can feel weird. You’re older, but you don’t necessarily feel wiser. You can be surrounded by people all day and still feel homesick. I, for one, can say I understand this feeling after recently celebrating my 19th birthday. In an attempt to dodge the birthday blues, I learned some very valuable things that made celebrating my birthday while in college just a little bit more special.
First, treat yourself. I got my nails done, and something about taking that time for myself completely changed my mood. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It could be getting your favorite coffee or takeout instead of going to the dining hall. Just do something that feels like a gift to you.
Second, make plans with friends! I got dinner with my friends off campus, and it made me feel so special. While nothing beats being around family, I still got to hear a bad rendition of “Happy Birthday,” which, in my opinion, is what birthdays are about.
Lastly, give yourself some grace. Not every birthday is going to be the best. Getting older is scary, but it’s also a privilege. Take time for yourself, reflect on all the amazing years you’ve already had, and get ready to make a thousand new memories during the next year.
Bye-bye birthday blues, I can’t wait until next year!
