A Lazy Girl’s Guide to Halloween

Hey you! Yeah, you. Guess what starts in under three weeks! Yeah, only the best lineup of a Halloweekend that we’ve seen in years. You heard it here first (or maybe your calendar app), but Halloweekend falls on a wonderful, spooky, auspicious Friday-Saturday-Sunday run this year.

What’s that? Oh no! You’ve been so busy with life and friends, and school, that you haven’t even been thinking about how good you’re going to look on those fine October nights? Is Spirit Halloween too expensive? TikTok doesn’t have your back on fun costumes in your budget? Don’t worry, I’ve been there.

Obviously, (as Cady Heron so eloquently voices in Mean Girls), you can just wear lingerie and some form of animal ears. But if that isn’t the vibe you’re feeling, here are some cute, simple, and thrift-friendly costume ideas, from my Lazy Girl brain to yours.

Paramount Pictures
Scarecrow

Classic.

Here’s what you need: any farmer-esque flannel, something plaid or checkered. Emphasis on the picnic blanket vibe. Also: some sort of denim bottom. Skirt, shorts, pants, whatever the weather calls for! Straw hat if you’re feeling that, farmer’s cap if you’re not. Grab some sparkly orange-ish eyeshadow and brown eyeliner, and draw on your patches around your face and other exposed skin!

Really, the essence of Scarecrow is all we’re capturing. Bonus points for an Instagram post with some pumpkins!

Mime

Because who doesn’t want to get a little European?

A black and white striped top, black or red bottoms. Beret if you want to go the extra mile! Curled pigtails for an extra chic look, and a red lip. Mimes love a pale look, so if you have any white face paint, get ghostly! Or, just do some art around the eyes. C’est parfait!

A Bug

No, seriously, have you seen the colors on some of those critters?

For a ladybug, a black top with a red skirt, wings, and face paint will do! For a bumblebee, a black top, a yellow and black striped bottom, wings, face paint, and antennae will work nicely. And for a Butterfly, think Katniss from Hunger Games, let those Mockingjay wings fly!

A Niche Book/Game Character

Let’s get those wheels turning. Easily recognizable, prop aided, dress it up or down. Waldo, from Where’s Waldo. Mouse (with cookies!), from If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. Princess, from The Princess and the Pea (or, literally, any fairy tale). Tricky, from Subway Surfers. Rainbow Fish (with scales!), from The Rainbow Fish.

Fairy

There’s genuinely a million interpretations you could take to this. At its core, this costume is wings, glitter, and a going-out outfit. Thrift a glitzy short dress! Or go for fae-fairy, and get the ball gown. Don’t skimp on the glitter.

If all else fails, turn to the movies. Any character in a movie is already a Halloween costume ripe for picking; they’re just lucky enough to have whole departments for costumes and makeup.

Happy Halloween!
