9 Thoughts You Have When You Go Home for the Weekend

Last weekend was the first weekend since starting college that I had no serious commitments to fulfill. Since I live a fairly short drive away from campus, I wanted to return home for a couple days and take a breather from city life. These are some entertaining thoughts that I had at various points over the weekend.

1. “My dog!”

I see so many dogs every day on my walks around campus, but none of them compare to my own four-legged best friend. My heart melted when I saw the excitement in her bright blue eyes and slobbery smile. I swept her into a tight hug, which she actually might not have enjoyed too much but I definitely did.

2. “Is that the smell of my favorite meal?”

I really took home-cooked meals for granted before college. But a perk of coming home to a mom who really missed me is having my favorite dinner cooked for me the first night I come back.

3. “Oh, how I missed this couch!”

Fond memories of binge watching Netflix from that very spot came rushing back. My house’s couch is definitely superior to any college lounge sofa.

4. “I can watch TV without headphones?”

I’ve grown accustomed to living with roommates and always watching TV with headphones but wow, never before have my ears felt so free!

5. “My dorm bed might be comfier than my home bed…”

I certainly prefer my nice mattress at home to my saggy dorm mattress, but my dorm bed is cushioned with thick memory foam and a comfy mattress pad, which makes it very easy to miss.

6. “I forgot I had more clothes!”

After living in the same outfits for the past two months, I was relieved to rediscover the rest of my wardrobe!

7. “My bathroom is so nice!”

At college I share a tiny bathroom with four other people, so sharing a slightly bigger and cleaner one with just my sister seemed like a luxury! I felt like I was using a whole new bathroom right out of Fixer Upper.

8. “It’s so quiet here.”

Instead of the sounds of city traffic and construction, I was mostly surrounded by suburban silence. The loudest sound I heard was the occasional low hum of a neighbor’s lawnmower.

9. “I didn’t realize how much I missed this town!”

It took being away from home for a few months to realize how much I missed places in town – from the local farmer’s market to my favorite restaurant. Just driving through the familiar streets, I really didn’t want to leave!

Going home for the first time since I started college made me oddly nostalgic. I was so ready to escape the small town life that I forgot how much I love my hometown. Yes, I am happy on my new journey through college and living in the city, but I will always be a hometown girl at heart.
