Ever since moving to the United States, I’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of titles available on Netflix. I’m from Dubai, and in comparison, our Netflix collection is much more limited. It always seems like there’s something new to watch, and now that spring break is coming up, we’re definitely going to have a lot more free time. Everyone is familiar with the popular shows: Stranger Things, The Office, You. But what about the ones that aren’t as well known? As an avid TV watcher, I have a lot of experience when it comes to finding underrated gems on Netflix, so I’ve compiled a list of my favorites that I think everyone should check out this spring break.

Lovesick

I watched this show back in 2018, and it’s still one of my favorites. If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, this is the show for you. Lovesick follows Dylan, who, upon being diagnosed with an STD, contacts every girl he’s been with to inform them. I know that doesn’t sound very romantic, but it definitely took me by surprise. There are only 3 seasons, and the episodes are pretty short, so you’ll be sure to speed through this one in no time.

Arrested Development

Some people might be confused why this show is on the list, because it’s relatively famous, and received immense critical acclaim over its run. However, whenever I tell people that my favorite comedy show is Arrested Development, their answer is always “What?” I finished this show back in September, and it’s honestly the funniest show I’ve ever watched. It’s about a family that loses their wealth after the patriarch is arrested for white-collar crime. It premiered back in 2003, but it’s still relevant―and hilarious―as ever. They also made a reboot back in 2013, which I’m choosing not to watch because I don’t want it to ruin the show for me.

Spinning Out

This is the most recent show on this list, having just come out in January, but unfortunately, it’s already been canceled by Netflix after only one season. I still highly recommend it, though. It follows Kat, a figure skater, who has to partner up with her so-called “enemy,” Justin, in order to save her skating career. Not only is it super cute, but it also deals with lots of important issues, such as family and mental health. There are only ten episodes, so if you don’t have much time to commit, this show should be at the top of your list. And it stars Kaya Scodelario (a.k.a. Effy, from Skins), the original Tumblr girl.

Crazy-Ex Girlfriend

It’s hard to put into words how much I love this show. It ended last year, and I honestly don’t think there’s ever been a show like it, and there never will be. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a musical romantic comedy-drama. The songs are hilarious, the characters are insanely relatable, and it handles so many important topics, especially mental illness. A lot of people get turned off from this show when they find out it’s a musical, but it’s honestly so worth it. If you’re unsure, just watch one of the music videos from the show on Youtube―one of my personal favorites is “Let’s Generalize About Men.”

Good Girls

The last show on this list has often been hailed as the female version of Breaking Bad, but I think it deserves to stand on its own. Before people freak out, don’t worry, I’m not saying that it’s better than Breaking Bad. This show is all about three mothers who break into the crime business to less than stellar results. It’s hilarious, intense, and extremely binge-worthy. I finished the first season in one day, that’s how good it is. The third season just started airing a couple of weeks ago, so you don’t have too much to catch up on.

All in all, I highly recommend checking out all of these shows. I love The Office just as much as the next person, but next time when you’re looking for a show to make you laugh, try Arrested Development instead. Or, honestly, any of these shows because they’re all hilarious. I hope you enjoy all these shows and have a great spring break!
