5 Steps for the Perfect DIY Spa Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

With the unpredictable Boston weather we’ve been dealing with lately, you and your friends have probably spent more time indoors than anywhere else. So, why not make a boring snowy weekend, a cold weeknight, or a snow day fun and therapeutic?! All of these treatments are easy to make, cheap to buy, and might even be made from things already in your kitchen! None of us broke college girls can afford a real day at the spa, so here are 5 DIY spa treatments you and your friends can try in the comfort of your own rooms or apartments to make for a fun, cheap and DIY spa day!

Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

What you do:

Mix the oils together and rub them through your hair. Put your hair up in a bun and you can put on a shower cap if you want. Leave the oils in your hair for about 20 minutes then take a shower washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner as you normally would. The combo of calming oils adds shine and moisture!

Calming Facemask

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

What you do:

Mix together until the honey, cinnamon and nutmeg make a thick paste. Apply to your face and leave it on for about 30 minutes. When rinsing off, rub around your skin for extra exfoliation. Make sure to moisturize after! This scrub can reduce redness and swelling with its calming ingredients and is perfect for dull, stressed out skin!

Chocolate Facial

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt

What you do:

If you don’t want the extreme exfoliation of the Calming Face Mask, try the chocolate facemask! Mix the ingredients together and apply to your face with a makeup brush. Leave on for 20-25 minutes and rinse with warm water before applying moisturizer.

Apricot Hand and Nail Scrub

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons apricot oil

What you do:

Perfect for some pre-manicure exfoliation! Combine ingredients and massage into hand and nails. Make sure to scrub on the nail beds; the lemon juice will help remove any stains!

Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ¼ tablespoon lemon juice

What you do:

Great for arms and legs for pre- mani/pedis. Mix ingredients and apply to body scrubbing into skin. You can leave it on for a few minutes or rinse right off. It helps skin shed dullness and become soft and bright. Make sure to moisturize after rinsing!
