The 5 Stages You Go Through When Your Roommate Leaves for the Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

You’ve only been at school for a few months, but you and your roommate are already inseparable.  Whether it’s doing laundry, eating meals, or going for a jog, your roommate is your companion for everything, and you would be lost without her!  So, when she goes home for the weekend, it can feel like you’re missing your other half, and you’ll inevitably experience the five stages of roomie withdrawal.

Stage 1: Never Wanting Her to Leave

As soon her bags are packed, and it’s time to say goodbye, you’ll no doubt wish she didn’t have to go.  After all, who else is going to binge on Ben & Jerry’s with you at 1 a.m.?

Stage 2: Feeling Lonely

When you’re living in a tiny dorm room with someone, you’re used to always having someone around. So when your roomie isn’t there, the room can feel surprisingly empty.  Suddenly, you don’t have someone to gossip with 24/7, and you may find yourself FaceTiming your BFF from back home just to have someone to talk to.

Stage 3: Realizing You Have the Room All to Yourself

After the loneliness passes, you realize you have the entire dorm room to yourself and all the freedom that comes with it.  No pants? No problem!  It’s your time to enjoy some “you” time and take advantage of some much needed space.

Stage 4: Being More Productive Than Ever Before

As much as you love your roomie, having a friend around all the time can be distracting and makes you reluctant to stay focused and do homework.  Taking advantage of a weekend to yourself to start the essay that’s due at the end of the week can help you stay ahead of your work, and leave more time to have fun with your roommate when she comes back.

Stage 5: Getting Excited to Reunite With Your Roomie

Even though it’s only been a short weekend, it can feel like an eternity since you’ve seen your roommate. Leaving her a welcome note on your whiteboard will definitely let her know how much you missed her! Now that you’ve experienced a weekend without your roommate, you can enjoy hanging out with her even more, and appreciate the benefits of living with your best friend!
