4 Ways to Brighten Up Gloomy Winter Days

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

It’s January in Boston, which means three things: it’s gray, it’s cold, and it’s depressing. Oh and it’s definitely snowy. Sure the snow looks pretty while it’s falling, but all too soon you’re sick of looking at it in those huge brown piles on the sides of Comm. Ave. If you’re like me, this is the time of year when you fall into the classic “Winter Depression.” I cry a little looking at Throwback Thursday pictures from the summer where my skin looks tan, my hair looks bright, and I just look like an all around happier person.  For me, January and February are loooong. Gone is the “December excitement” for the holidays and break and here is the struggle of getting back into a school routine and bundling up every single day.

Thankfully, January is coming to and end and February is almost here.

Even though summer is four and a half months away, slowly Boston becomes its old self, when the colors bloom in late March and April and the birds come back from their winter vacations. Until then, check out this list of four easy things that can help you live through these gloomy winter months until the colors and warmth of spring and summer are upon us once again!

1. Put Some Flowers In Your Room

Fake flowers, real flowers, basically any type of flowers! They can really brighten your mood and add some pop to the gray day outside. Plus, if they’re real, they can make your room smell good too. Flowers make me thing of spring and summer and remind me that all this snow will melt, and that all the flowers around Boston will bloom again eventually. You can buy some yourself, or even better make your boyfriend send them to you so its like you’re getting presents, color and excitement all at once!

2. Don’t Be Afraid To Wear Something Bright

Think you can’t wear hot pink pants in the middle of January? You most definitely can. I hate when people think that because its winter, your wardrobe has to consist of black, brown, navy, and gray. These colors are depressing! Brighten it up every few days and trust me it’ll definitely brighten your mood.

3. Don’t Forget You Have Feet

During the winter the only time I look at my toes is when I’m put flip-flops on to take a shower. Yikes. Don’t let your toes go neglected just because it’s wintertime! Paint your toes bright red or lime green just for fun. Or even better get a mani-pedi with your friends and bring back the feelings of freshly painted toes in the summer sand.

4. Feeling Ghostly?

If you’re really depressed about losing that summer glow you can always use some of the Jergen’s Natural Glow lotion. I’ve used it a few times on my legs and it definitely works! Bring back some of that summertime tan we all miss so much.
