Credit cards often get a bad reputation, sometimes bad enough to deter people from getting a credit card altogether. But credit cards aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be. As long as you practice self-control and financial responsibility, getting a credit card in college may be the right choice for you. Here are four reasons why you should get a credit card in college.

1. You Establish Your Credit History

You may not have to think about your credit score until you’re out of college and entering “the real world,” but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for it. By getting a credit card in college, you’ll have a head start at establishing your credit history and building up your credit score.

2. Great for Emergencies

No, emergencies don’t include brunch or shopping. While it may be tempting to use your credit card for extravagant purchases, it could lead to a long road of debt. It’s best to limit these large transactions unless it’s an emergency. The “broke college student” stereotype is real sometimes, which is why a credit card is necessary during emergencies.

3. Become Smarter with Money

Having to pay off your balance each month teaches you how to become financially responsible and more conscious of your spending habits. Over time, you’ll become smarter with your money by only spending what you have and perhaps even spend less and save more.

4. Reward Programs

Most credit cards offer incentives, such as points that could be redeemed towards travel or cash back. College students could use all the free stuff they could get, so reward programs are just another reason to get a credit card in college.

As long as you practice good money habits, getting a credit card during college is in your best interest. If you don’t already have one, you should definitely look into getting one and finding the right one for you.
