Singers can be role models too. Take Billie Eilish for example…she is a 17-year-old singer who, according to the New York Times, has been “redefining teen pop stardom.” Her soothing voice and visual aesthetic have allowed her to quickly rise to the top of the charts. Aside from her beautiful voice and most famous album When we all fall asleep where do we go?, there is something that we can learn from Eilish’s approach towards life.

Don’t care about what other people think.

Billie Eilish has stood apart from other singers due to her unconventional style. She wears very baggy clothing and sings about topics that are darker than one would expect to hear. In an interview she explained, “I like to glorify what makes people uncomfortable.” This unique persona and performance is what gives her an edge above other singers and attracts millions of fans.

Impress yourself.

Work on impressing yourself, not others. We live in a world of instant sharing capabilities and because of this, we tend to hyper-focus on what we assume everyone else will like. However, at the end of the day, all you have is yourself and all that matters is how you feel about yourself. Other people’s thoughts or judgments cannot change you. Eilish told Ssense, “I’m not gonna look like anybody except what I am. I want to impress myself.” In other words, in order to impress yourself, you have to start with being real with yourself.

Dance like nobody’s watching!

There is a difference between how we dance in our bedrooms versus how we dance at a party – but not for Billie Eilish. She dances as if nobody is watching. Her eccentric and upbeat moves just make you want to let go too. It’s easy to get caught up in caring about what other people think. However, it’s when we live in the present moment and pursue what we truly desire, that we easily find happiness.

Delete negativity.

It’s important to have your mind focused on your goals, and to not let anything get in the way of them. If something hinders progress in any way, simply delete it. Billie Eilish did just this, and as she told People Magazine, “There are so many things I can’t stop but I can delete Twitter. I have too much love for myself. I don’t need to see all these opinions.” Don’t lose sight of your passions to the opinion of sheep.

Billie Eilish represents the idea of doing what you want no matter what other people are going to think about it. She told The Last Magazine, “I don’t want to be just one thing at all ever, and I don’t care how you find me. If you f*ck with at least one small part of me, then I respect that. Or even if you don’t f*ck with me, I respect that too, because people have their own f*cking opinions and I don’t care.” There’s truth to this — other people’s opinions of you shouldn’t matter as long as you are okay with yourself.
