30 Songs to Remember That You’re a Badass Woman

In a world where we as women are often shamed for our political views, work ethic, love or sexual life, and pretty much our entire persona, it can be hard to remain sassy and confident. But fear not: in the midst of all the patriarchic nonsense, many badass women are paving the way for you to find your voice. Some of them even make music to empower us to be unapologetically ourselves.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Kesha—picture 9-year-old me screaming the lyrics to “Tik Tok”—and even more so in the face of the lawsuit she filed against Dr. Luke for infliction of emotional distress, gender-based hate crimes and employment discrimination in 2014. The strength of character she displayed in that time and through her song Praying was incredibly inspiring. So imagine my excitement when I heard that she co-wrote a song for the soundtrack of On the Basis of Sex, a movie that deals with sex discrimination! In her song Here Comes The Change,” Kesha acknowledges the difficulty of speaking up and fighting against injustice: “I know it’s hard to be the lightning in the dark. Hold on tight you’ll be alright.”

Scheduled to be released on Christmas day (December 25), On the Basis of Sex follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (played by Felicity Jones) as she teams with her husband Marty (Armie Hammer) to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of sex discrimination. I, for one, cannot wait to watch this empowering movie and cry when hearing Kesha’s song because yes, I adore this woman.

While waiting for the movie to come out, I will be listening to a few of my favorite feminist anthems. You can listen here too!

Madeleine Albright once said: “It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.” So, ladies: be you, and be loud. Raise your voice against injustice, and dance your ass off to these amazing bops.
