GSU Starbucks is advertising pumpkin spice lattes, sororities are posting apple picking photos, and the wind tunnels are in West Campus again, so it must be close to Halloween. Read on for some easy, last-minute Halloween costumes inspired by 2019 memes, movies, and TV shows.

VSCO Girl

You can take a deep dive into the VSCO girl trend and what exactly constitutes a VSCO girl, but there are a few key pieces for this costume: a scrunchie, an oversized t-shirt, a Hydroflask water bottle with stickers, and either Birkenstocks or Vans. To complete the look, try wearing a pastel Fjallraven Kanken, puka shell necklace, and spending your whole evening saying “sksksk, and I oop.”

A Cult Member from Midsommar

Midsommar cult member costumes seem like they may be this year’s version of the face masks from The Purge. Pick out any floral dress, add a flower crown, and carry around a mallet for the best pictures so you don’t have to keep clarifying your costume.

Ashley O from Black Mirror’s “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too”

Though Black Mirror season five was a hit and miss in terms of its episodes, Miley Cyrus’ Ashley O costume is fairly easy to emulate and spot. The key is to find a short pink wig that resembles Ashley O’s, and a white top and shorts. If you’re in a pinch, anything white should get the idea across; just try not to get “On A Roll” stuck in your head for the whole night.

The Tethered from Us

Simultaneously a fashion trend and a horror movie costume, the iconic red boiler suits are perfect to dress up as one of the Tethered from Jordan Peele’s film, Us. Complete it with a pair of oversized scissors, sandals, and leather driving gloves. Bonus points for incorporating white rabbits somehow as well.

Jules’ Euphoria version of Juliet from Romeo and Juliet

Dressing up as a character from a TV show who dresses as an actress from a movie? It might be a bit confusing to explain to people, but Jules’ version of Juliet is worth putting on the list. Not only is Euphoria incredibly popular currently, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is an iconic movie as well. Find a pair of angel wings, a long white dress, and go heavier on the eye makeup for this look.

Molly and Amy from Booksmart

The past few years have seen more films that portray middle and high school more realistically, such as Eighth Grade and The Edge of Seventeen. This year, Booksmart takes that title. Perfect for best friends, this costume can be quickly pulled together from your closet or your friends. For Molly, wear a plaid blazer, yellow turtleneck, and a denim skirt. For Amy, find a denim jacket with patches, layer it over a brown sweater and red collared skirt, and finish it off with a pair of striped jeans.

Janet from The Good Place

A character from The Good Place would be perfect for a group costume but might be hard to distinguish costumes from everyday wear when everyone is on their own. Janet’s signature purple vest set and floral dress are the most recognizable, and you could also be Bad Janet – though that might also come across as Sandy from Grease.

Looking back on the year so far, it’s been a great ten months for movies, memes, and TV shows. Halloween is the perfect time to dress up as your favorite characters while also testing your ability to pull things together last minute!
