10 TV Episodes to Get You in the Halloween Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Gossip Girl – “The Handmaiden’s Tale” Season 1, Episode 6 (2007)

While its not your traditional Halloween episode, these Upper East Siders sure know how to throw a Masquerade Ball with style – and with loads of drama. Vanessa arrives, potentially destroying Dan and Serena’s relationship, and Jenny pulls a fast one on Chuck. Its certainly not one to miss!

Bones – “Mummy in the Maze” Season 3, Episode 5 (2007)
Watch this Halloween-themed episode for no other reason than to see the ridiculously over-the-top costumes. And even though they are together now, it’s fun to watch sparks fly between Brennan (going as Wonder Woman) and Booth (going as a “squint”). But the crimes don’t stop because it’s Halloween – if you are afraid of snakes… consider this a warning.

How I Met Your Mother – “The Slutty Pumpkin” Season 1, Episode 6 (2005)
At the gang’s annual Halloween rooftop party, the hopelessly romantic Ted returns in hopes of finding his “soulmate,” the Slutty Pumpkin. While Barney tries to coax him out of it, Lily and Marshall are downstairs at the bar trying to win a costume contest.

Community – “Intro to Statistics” Season 1, Episode 7 (2009)/“Epidemiology” Season 2, Episode 6 (2010)
These out-of-control Community episodes – equally amazing – are a great way to get you in Halloween mode. Whether it’s a Dia de Los Muertos party or a Zombie Apocalypse set to the ABBA soundtrack, Community does not fail to entertain.

Freaks and Geeks – “Tricks and Treats” Season 1, Episode 3 (1999)
Watching the Halloween episode is a great way to start obsessing over this cult classic. If the before-they-were-famous, all-star cast isn’t enough to entice you, this episode centers around the age-old question, when is too old to still be trick-or-treating?

Modern Family – “Halloween” Season 2, Episode 6 (2010)

In easily one of the best Modern Family episodes, Claire puts all her energy into creating a haunted house, even though it seems like the rest of the family couldn’t care less. Mitch is preoccupied because he mistakenly went to work in a Spiderman costume, and Gloria is angry with Jay and Manny for making fun of her accent. All of these stories combined make for a fantastic Halloween episode.

Supernatural – “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester” Season 4, Episode 7 (2008)
What’s more Halloween-y than the original demon of Halloween himself? The (very attractive) Winchester brothers investigate a case involving a witch who wants to raise this demon from hell. Needless to say, this creepy episode is high on the list of great Halloween episodes.

Friends – “The One With the Halloween Party” Season 8, Episode 6 (2001)
Who has a better chance at winning an arm-wrestling contest, Sputnik or a pink, fuzzy bunny? Watch the equally weak Ross and Chandler face off in this epic Friends Halloween episode. Also, a pregnant Rachel tries to get trick-or-treating kids to like her, and Phoebe spills the beans on twin sister Ursula’s true identity.

The Office – “Halloween” Season 2, Episode 5 (2005)
Three-hole-punch Jim? Sith Lord Dwight? Nothing says spooky like an Office Halloween, unless you’re the employee about to be laid off in this classic episode. As Michael Scott says, “Firing is very scary stuff.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – “Halloween” Season 2, Episode 6 (1997)

Vampires and demons galore! Whether you’re a Buffy fan or not, this Halloween episode is the number one must-see for those attempting to get seriously spooked out. Sunnydale turns upside down when its residents actually turn into the costumes they are wearing. Plus, you get to see extremely young versions of Alyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz.
