10 Must Watch Films By Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

With the entertainment industry so male dominated, it is important to support women in the business. Women are a vast minority behind the camera and make up only about 7% of directors of top grossing movies. The gender discrimination in Hollywood is not very commonly talked about but extremely prevalent. The American Civil Liberties Union even started an investigation about this inequality.

It’s crucial to watch films by women because not only does it financially support them, but it also shows refreshing female perspective. Since we are constantly surrounded by so many male narratives, it is a nice and necessary reprieve.

Here are some great recent films by women to check out.

1. “Suffragette”—Sarah Gavron (2015)

2. “Girlhood”—Celine Sciamma (2014)

3. “Diary of A Teenage Girl”—Marielle Heller (2015)

4. “Obvious Child”—Gillian Robespierre (2014)

5. “Selma”—Ava DuVernay (2014)

6. “Appropriate Behavior”—Desiree Akhavan (2014)

7. “Beyond the Lights”—Gina Prince-Bythewood (2014)

8. “The Bronze”—Melissa Rauch (2015)

9. “Infinitely Polar Bear”—Maya Forbes (2014)
