Winter Storm Nemo…Expectations, Pre-cautions, & SNOW.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the “Blizzard of ’78” which swept Rhode Island, in surprise, where a whopping 54 inches of snow were dumped within 36 hours.  This blizzard hit other parts of the Northeast too, like the Tri-State area and Massachusetts.  This blanket of white, which may have looked beautiful, was a Mother Nature catastrophe-taking around 100 lives and injuring around 4,500.  The cost of this storm?  Around a whopping $1.8 billion ($520 million in that day).

This weekend, we are expected to see a huge storm slam the Northeast.  We all know how quickly weather changes, especially in this part of the U.S.A., but meterologists are positive with the prediction of heavy snowfall, thick ice, and gusty winds….Blizzard of ’13 is expected to hit the history books.  Weather Channel has officially named this storm “Nemo” and is already calling this a notorious blizzard.  Do you think the Northeast will stay dry this weekend or are you going to prepare for the worst?  Time will tell.

So how much snow are you getting?

What should you do to prepare?  Learning to prepare for a storm now can save you a lot of time, energy, and maybe even your life.  Luckily, most of you are on a college campus where things like electricty and heat are taken well care of through maitanence crews, however there are still a few things you can do to get ready for a snowed-in Friday night with friends!

Necessities for Nemo (or any winter storm)

  • Instant oatmeal and soup
  • Crackers
  • Granola bars
  • Canned goods including soup, vegetables, fruit, chili and tuna
  • Applesauce, fruit and pudding cups
  • Hot cocoa and instant coffee
  • Boxed juices
  • Cereal
  • Shelf-stable milk
  • Fill your rooms with candles…they provide light and a good smell in case the power goes out!
  • CHARGE YOUR PHONE!!
  • Get a few flashlights.  The manual-power ones will be the best for the event of a no-power-for-days type of situation
  • Stop at your nearest grocer for a pack of water bottles…better safe than sorry!
  • Blankets, blankets, blankets, and blankets…get it?  Stay warm!
  • Most importantly, stay indoors and only travel if it is an absolute emergency!

Having fun in Nemo (or any winter storm)

  • Stock up on hot-cocoa, blankets, movies (Finding Nemo anyone?), and yummy winter time snacks!  (If you’re over the age of 21, mixing a little bit of Bailey’s cream into your hot-chocolate will taste devine)
  • Bring out those board games like Headbands, Scrabble, Clue, Catch Phrase, and Uno.  Who said family game night had to just be with your family?!
  • Host a party in your dorm with a “pajama” theme so everyone stays nice and snug in this cold weather
  • During lunch of Friday, sneak a few lunch trays out of your cafeteria so you can enjoy sledding on your school’s hills….At Bryant, the best place is probably behind Salmo!  HUGE HILL!
