Selena Gomez has been on the top of the charts since her first solo album, Stars Dance, was released this July. She spent the last two months touring Europe, and recently began the US leg of her tour alongside the beautiful boys of Emblem3. Essentially, Selena Gomez is living the dream. Selena came to Boston on Saturday, October 12, bringing quite the show along with her. Seeing her in concert reinforced the reasons why we love Selena Gomez.

Her music is just oh-so catchy. Everyone has to admit that they’ve caught themselves singing “Come and Get It” under their breath at least once. Her songs get stuck in your head, but not in a bad way; more like a top-of-the-charts-hit way. The music Selena played at her concert was so fun and up-tempo, you can’t help but to sing along.

Her dance moves are a force to be reckoned with. After seeing Selena’s “Slow Down” music video, set in a club, it was pretty clear that the girl has moves. One tip that Selena clearly picked up from her idol Britney Spears was intense and fast-paced dance moves. It was exhausting just watching her; no wonder why she’s in such good shape. Speaking of, Selena is undeniably gorgeous- just another reason to love her (or envy her). Â

Selena figured out how to grow into a more mature artist without taking it too far. So many young celebrities have gone over the deep end while trying to create a mature image for themselves. Selena originated on The Disney Channel, but is certainly not a little girl any more. Instead of getting herself into trouble and scandal, Selena has focused on older sounding music and movies. Her new songs are clearly geared for an older audience, but are still innocent enough to avoid causing an uproar amongst her critics. Her live performance was interesting and fun, but not overly provocative (cough, cough, Miley Cyrus).

She is an example in moderation. The audience seemed to be a perfect split between families with children, and teenagers through young adults. While the second group was the one mainly targeted with Stars Dance, the younger audience seemed to enjoy the show just as much. Selena has been able to maintain her image in a way that retains her fans as we grow older. We were all very young when we started watching Selena on her Disney TV show “Wizards of Waverly Place.” As we, her original fan-base, grew up and became more mature, Selena grew as well. Her talent grew and her music became more substantial as she morphed as an artist that fit her fans needs. Since Selena’s reputation is still sparkling, she continues to attract young fans as well. Parents aren’t afraid that their daughters are looking up to Selena Gomez. She exemplified this moderation by incorporating her earlier music into the Stars Dace set list. All three of Selena’s previous records were represented with crowd favorites such as “Naturally,” “Round and Round,” and “Love You like a Love Song.” Selena has grown into a stronger artist without abandoning her roots.

Selena is a role model for girls. She is true to herself and encourages her fans to follow their dreams the way she does. Selena is beautiful without being overly provocative, proving that girls can be sexy while retaining their dignity. She’s also more humble than most celebrities- after receiving the Teen Choice Award for Female Hottie, Selena stated on an interview that she didn’t believe in judging people based on her looks, which is why she ignored this award in her acceptance speech and focused only on the award she received for her music. Additionally, many girls can take a page out of Selena’s relationship handbook. She managed to make her relationship with Justin Bieber last for two years, which is a difficult feat. However, Selena wasn’t afraid to leave the relationship when it no longer felt right for her. She gracefully handled all of the negative feedback about the break up because she knew what was right for herself. Selena addressed the breakup during her show before singing the nostalgic song “Love Will Remember.” She said that she can’t control what people say or think about her, but she knows what she feels. Girls watching this should take this as a message to do what they know is right, even if it is difficult. In a time when most celebrities are known for issues they’ve had with alcoholism, drug addictions and eating disorders, it is hard to find someone to look up to.  Selena has been an exception to this rule, and our fingers are crossed that she never changes her ways.
