Meet Cory Remsburg – A U.S. Hero

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Meet Cory Remsburg. Your average Arizona native who graduated in 2001 with the predetermined goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. In 2002, Cory was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment in Savannah, Georgia.  However, on October 1, 2009 Cory’s life was changed. On his tenth combat rotation, Cory was conducting a combat mission in Afghanistan when he was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion threw Cory into a canal where he was recovered and given lifesaving medical care by his fellow Rangers. After 3 months in a coma, Cory began to regain consciousness. 15 months after his injury, Cory was moved to outpatient receiving daily occupational, physical, vision and speech therapies.

Cory’s story is not the first of its kind. Cory is a strong, brave, exemplary American soldier. He has high standards, morals and dedication un-paralleled to your average American. He fought for our country and has since been seriously injured in doing so. But Cory’s story differs in one way; he has had the support of President Barack Obama along the way. Sgt. First Class Cory Remsburg first met Obama in Normandy during a D-Day reenactment. A few years later, when Cory was being treated in Bethesda Naval Hospital, he and Obama met again. Obama had not recognized Cory until he saw a picture of the two of them from their previous encounter shaking hands. Cory and Obama’s encounters did not end there. Following a visit to Cory, Obama paid tribute to him during an event for Disabled American Veterans. And most recently, Cory was invited to the State of the Union Address, where he was honored as a hero.

While many of you may not have recognized Cory during the State of the Union Address, we at Her Campus hope you will in the future. He exemplifies the true heroes of America – the men and women who risk their lives to defend this country and our freedom. It is our honor to spread the word of Cory’s story, and we hope you will do the same.
