Lone Survivor Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Marcus Luttrell, decorated Navy SEAL and author of the best-selling Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 discussed courage, honor and patriotism.

The lecture was co-sponsored by the Trustee Speaker Series and the Student Arts and Speaker Series.

Operation Redwing’s mission was to gather intelligence on a Taliban leader with ties to Osama bin Laden. During their trek, Taliban forces ambushed Luttrell and three SEAL colleagues. Hours later, after Marcus Luttrell had watched his friends die, a rescue helicopter carrying 16 special operation forces was shot down, killing all on board.

Though severely wounded, Luttrell crawled through the mountains in search of shelter, and was taken in and protected by the Afghan villagers of Sabray. He received the Navy Cross for his actions.

Marcus Luttrell was an amazing and inspirational speaker, leaving the Bryant student body appreciative for many things they have in their life. Bryant was lucky to have a man of such great honor come and speak to our peers, and educate us on what it is like to have a real “bad day.” If you haven not read the book or seen the movie, Her Campus recommends that you do both!
