How to Make Your Dorm Room Smell Nice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

When you live in a small, shared space like a dorm room, it is inevitable to have some weird smells occur. We can blame the weird smells on the buildings we live in, but there are important things that can be done to keep your dorm room smelling like a field of flowers, a refreshing ocean breeze, or simply fresh and clean.

1. Empty the trash

It is important to empty your trash can frequently, especially when there is smelly food in it. If possible, to prevent smells, throw your food leftovers away in a public trash can so it won’t stink up your room.

2. Clean the fridge

Your fridge can be a home for bad smells so make sure it’s always clean! Eat your leftovers promptly or throw them away if you don’t want them. Wipe down the shelves of your fridge (and the inside of your microwave) if there is a spill. Stick a box of baking soda in the fridge to help keep things fresh.

3. Clean your bathroom

If you live in a suite or townhouse, clean your bathroom weekly. Scrub the toilets, shower, sinks, and floor to ensure everything is sanitized and smells fresh.

4. Use fragrance

Once the weird smells from the trash, fridge, and bathroom are non-existent, use fragrance to make your space smell great. While we aren’t allowed to use candles, there are some alternatives like wallflower plug-ins, room sprays, and car vent deodorizers which you can put in the vents in your room. Be careful not to overdo it with the sprays or mix too many different scents together.

5. Open your windows

Open your windows frequently to let the fresh air in and the germs and bad smells out!
