How to Make Time For Your Grandparents This Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

The holidays are a perfect opportunity to spend time with your family and loved ones. For those of us who are lucky enough to still have our grandparents in our lives, this Thanksgiving break is a perfect time to remind them how much we love them. Here are some tips on how to make time for your grandparents during Thanksgiving.

If you spend Thanksgiving with them, it’s simple:

  • Make an effort to sit next to them during dinner, you’ll have plenty of time to hang with your cousins later, it’ll make them happy just to know you want to sit next to them.

  • And if you’re still stuck at the kids table during dinner, find them when its dessert time and you can enjoy a piece of pie together.

  • If they’re slaving away in the kitchen, help them! It’ll make their night knowing you want to help out and spend time with them. (And it will make their lives easier to have an extra set of hands helping prepare the meal)

  • Go out of your way to talk to them about your life. They care more than you think, so tell them what’s new in your life.

  • Not only talk, but ask them questions. You can learn so much from your grandparents so let them talk too.

If your grandparents live far away or if you are not able to see them this break here’s what to do:

  • Call. It’s that simple. Like I said before, they want to hear about your life, so talk, talk, talk. Don’t call to say Happy Thanksgiving and hang up. Put aside 20 or 30 minutes to really talk to them about your life as well as theirs.

  • You have a whole long weekend ahead of you. If your grandparents are not able to come to you for Thanksgiving, or if you spend it with the other side of the family, take a day to go visit them if they live close enough. Trust me you’ll have your whole life to go black Friday shopping. Put things into perspective and make time for those who mean a lot to you.

As much as no one wants to say it, our grandparents won’t be around forever. As we get older we need to do whatever we can to make time for them. If you do not have your grandparents in your life anymore, do these things with anyone else you care about. You parents, your aunts, uncles, siblings or anyone else your busy life doesn’t always have time for. So this Thanksgiving break, make some time for those you love, I promise it’ll make them very happy. And you’ll feel good about it too! Happy eats!
