How to Cope with Living in a Non-Air-Conditioned Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

To all of our readers living in non- air-conditioned halls this year, we feel your pain! To all of the freshmen and upper classmen living in an air-conditioned hall, read this and be thankful for what you have. To our students struggling out there, here are some ways you can cope with the heat!

1. Get Fans!

This is an obvious solution that many people ignore. Have a fan or two in your bedroom and in the common room of the suite. The loud noise may make it sound like your suite is an airplane currently taking off, but you won’t be as warm.

2. Don’t be in your suite…ever

If this is the solution you need to resort to, then do it. Just hang out with freshmen or friends that live in air-conditioned halls. Make yourself right at home. Your friends should understand the hell you are going through in your suite.

3. No bedding, No clothes, No problem

If you and your suitemates are comfortable with this option, then walk around in the nude. Sleep without sheets on the bed and without clothes. Some may say this is an extreme solution, but do you really want to be sweating in your suite? The choice is yours.

4. Hydration Station

By this, we don’t mean purchase your own bubbler or water fountain, but to stock up on ice cold water. Keep water in your fridge at all times and an ice tray as well.

5. Cold Showers

This solution is beneficial in more ways in one. You can stay cool while getting squeaky clean at the same time!

6. Deny the Reality

If none of the above solutions seem doable to you, just use your imagination. Sometimes denial is the best medicine. Maybe if you believe your suite isn’t 100 million degrees, then it won’t feel like it is?

7. Sleep in Uni / FSC/ Innovation Center

If you aren’t caught, why not? If hiding in the Uni is the only way to stay cool, then go for it. You are probably not the only one who has considered it.

8. Stick Your Head in the Fridge

This is a very simple solution for immediate help. Let’s not pretend we haven’t all tried this.

9. Spray Yourself With Water

This might make you feel like a disobedient cat, but this will definitely help you cool off. It might seem a little weird, but if your whole suite joins in then it can be a fun way to cool off together!

10. Unofficially Move Out

If you really can’t stand the heat in your non-air-conditioned hall, then leave and bunk it with a friend. Purchase an air mattress or sleep on their couch. You will never have to worry about your horrible suite ever again.
