It’s no secret that attending college is bound to leave you stressed out.  Time management, deadlines, and exams leave no time for giving your body extra TLC from the wear and tear.  Sometimes the fastest and easiest thing to do is to grab anything that comes in a wrapper in order to allow your fingers to spend more time glued to your keyboard.

Are you getting more stressed just thinking about it?

Here are some tips on how to take control over your stress and be kind to your body at the same time!

  1. Take a long walk around campus (at least 20 minutes) – This helps to clear your mind, as well as burn those extra calories from the day.  Walking has been known to burn just as many calories as jogging, as long as it’s at a fast pace.
  2. Take fruit to-go! Instead of reaching for that oh-so-convenient bag of chips, take an apple to your library sesh.  This not only will help you study, but it will give you nutrients to help your body beat the negative effects from being stressed.  Cutting the calories and feeling better is a win-win situation!

3.  Go to Yoga!  Bryant offers Yoga 5 times a week!! The classes are only an hour long, just enough time to relax and get a good workout in without taking too much time out of your day.  Also, they’re all at different times throughout the week, so one class is sure to be during your free time! Click here to view the full group exercise class schedule.

4.  Have a smart phone? Download the “My Fitness Pal” app!  This app allows you to enter your current weight, then your goal weight and how fast you want to lose it.  It allows you to track your calories and exercise while giving you a goal of how many calories to eat per day to lose the weight!!

5.  Socialize-it’s Friday night!  It’s okay to give up a few hours of your school work so go out this Friday for a few hours, get a good night sleep, and then spend Saturday doing work in the library with friends!

6. Wear comfortable and loose fit clothing when possible…a pair of yogas and a sweatshirt is much comfier than jeans and a blazer for slaving away in the library all day!  If you know anything about Bryant’s library it’s that the temperature is either extremely freezing or extremely hot…be prepared for both!  Throw a pair of fuzzy socks in it for the cold days and have a hair tie to throw your hair up on the hot ones!

7. Make sure you get enough sleep! We all know our sleep schedules are far from ideal. Even when there is no work to be done, we can’t get to sleep because we are used to being up past midnight!  Getting sleep helps your mind recharge, reenergize, and refocus!  All-nighters may work for some but they always end up leaving you groggy…those 8 hours your mom yelled about are haunting you again!

The biggest lesson here is to grab some persepctive.  There aren’t enough hours in the day to join Tri-Sig, become Student Senate President, work at Ronzios, and still hand in your TJX Marketing Project.  Separate your co-corriculars from your academics and figure out which co-corriculars will be the most beneficial.  These include those clubs and organizations which will not only be a learning experience but will be a ton of fun.  Pick one or two of them.  If you end up not liking one you can always drop it and pick up something else.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with your co-corriculars when your academics are what is really going to get you an interview.  It’s the reason why you are in school: academics.  You won’t be able to enjoy all your out of class activities if your grades are slipping…gain some perspective ladies!
