Campus Celebrity: Student Government Treasurer Harrison Garrett

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Harrison Garrett

Year: 2019

Major/Minor: Applied Economics (Major), Finance (Minor), Political Science (Minor)

Hometown: Southington, CT

HC: How did you get involved with Student Government at Bryant?

HG: During the spring semester of my Freshman year, I realized that I wanted to get more involved at Bryant. After talking to members of Student Government, I noticed that joining the organization would allow me to serve the student body and leave my mark on the Bryant community. Later that semester, I ran for Student Senate and was fortunate enough to be elected by my peers.

HC: What is your favorite part of being Student Government Treasurer?

HG: Without a doubt, my favorite part of being Student Government Treasurer is getting to meet and work with Presidents and Treasurers of other organizations. Bryant has around 100 student-run clubs and organizations, which means there are a lot of student leaders that need to request budgets. Getting to understand the needs of our clubs and organizations, and getting to work with these student leaders allows me to be much more connected with our student body.

HC: What is something you hope to accomplish this year as Treasurer?

HG: In past years, the Ways and Means Commission had not been allocating as much to clubs and organizations as they were collecting in student fees. As the budgeting arm of the Student Government, Ways and Means should be spending as much as possible to enrich campus and advance the goals of Bryant’s clubs and organizations. My main goal this year as Treasurer is to make sure were spending as much as we can on clubs and organizations, and I’m happy to say Ways and Means is making progress toward this goal.

HC: Do you have any advice for student organization Treasurers?

HG: My main piece of advice would be that there is no limit to the amount Treasurers can request for. Whether it be a new event or speaker on campus, or an off-campus trip or conference, I would encourage Treasurers to think of new ways they can advance the goals of their organization, even if it means requesting for more money. Financially, Ways and Means is in a position where we can fund organizations at higher levels, so Treasurers should never feel limited with what they can request for. I would also encourage Treasurers to reach out to myself, or other members of Ways and Means if they are looking for new ways to help their organizations. Ways and Means sees a wide variety of budget requests from many different clubs and organizations, so we would be happy to lend a hand and give organizations new ideas.

HC: What is a fun fact about yourself?

HG: A fun fact about myself is that I am an avid golfer. Back in high school, I used to play around 100 rounds per year!
