50 Shades of Grey Movie: Expectations vs. Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Expectation 1:  Their relationship is wildly intense

Reality: Their relationship’s intensity just isn’t portrayed the same way as in the book. Scenes that were steamy and full of tension in the book, like when Anastasia interviews Christian, are funny in the movie. Overall, their encounters have a much more playful feel in the movie than they did when reading.

Expectation 2:  It’s a porno and has excessive nudity

Reality: Overall, for such a sexual movie it has a lot less nudity than to be expected. There are arguably more naked scenes in The Wolf of Wall Street than there are in 50 Shades. Even during the scenes from the red room of pain, the movie was much less explicit than it could have been.  Of course the movie had its fair share of sex scenes, but it was done more tastefully than many people expected.

Expectation 3:  Christian Grey (& Elliot for that matter) are insanely hot and rugged

Reality: One can’t argue that the actor who plays Christian (Jamie Dornan) isn’t hot by everyday standards, but he wouldn’t be every girl’s first pick for Christian Grey. In the books, Christian is rugged, intense, and commanding. However, the baby-faced movie version of Christian just doesn’t make the cut with his rendition of “laters, baby.”

Expectation 4:  It will have a great ending

Reality: Spoiler alert! Most readers probably picked up the second book immediately after finishing the first because they couldn’t wait to see the fate of Christian and Anastasia’s relationship. However, the movie failed in this sense.  Everyone in the theater seemed to collectively be thinking “this cannot be the end….” when the credits rolled and was overall disappointed in the movie’s ending.  Even if the producers were staying true to the plot of the first book, it made for a truly anticlimactic ending to the movie.
