5 Things To Know For The Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Being a college student can sometimes make it hard to keep up with the latest news.  I try my best to scroll through my Time app every morning, to hear about everything on health topics to politics, but the rest of my day is consumed with meetings, homework, and class.  I, and well you too, need to hear about the news.  I’m not talking about the latest story on Kate Middleton’s nude pictures, I’m talking about “The Newsroom“-style news; news that is truly important to society…the type of news that can, and potentially will, effect you.  So after stumbling around CNN, I wrote up 5 things I think you should know this week…

1.  Cancer death may become as rare as dying from pneumonia..one day.

  • Doctors at MD Anderson are launching the “Moon Shots Program” in February 2013.  Not a lot is known about the program but it will aim to cure several types of cancer…good enough to me.

2. The Genesse County Jail is overbooked

  • The Genesse County Jail in Flint, MI has become overbooked; with a maximum capacity of 580, the jail is now home to 703.  Undersheriff Chris Swanson was told to release 175 inmates but continually reassured the public these inmates will be kept on probation.

3.  Humans have another relative

  • From a finger bone and two teeth researchers and scientists have discovered an entire population of extinct human relatives called Denisovans.  The small remnants were found in a cave in southern Siberia…apparently some people today share genes with these people!

4. Obama bears full responsibility for ‘everything’

  • Obama discussed his frustration with the tone in Washington on 60 Minutes last night.  He said he takes responsibility for Washington not passing many of the promised laws he made when entering presidency.  “I think that, you know, as president I bear responsibility for everything, to some degree,” he said on CBS’ “60 Minutes.”

5. Unepmloyment rates have risen

  • 26 states reported rising unemployment rates with 7 of those states being critical for the presidential electin.  According to CNN, nationwide the unemployment rate was 8.1% in August but in Michigan alone has rose to 9.4%.  Only 12 states reported lower unemployment rates.
