10 Things You Need to Know before the Elizabeth Smart S.A.S.S Event

1.)   Elizabeth Smart was abducted by Brian David Mitchell from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 5, 2002.

2.)   She was only 14 years old at the time of her kidnapping.

3.)   She was found nine months later on March 12, 2003, in Sandy, Utah, about 18 miles from her home.

4.)   Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee were indicted for her kidnapping, but initially ruled unfit to stand trial. They were both eventually convicted.

5.)   Elizabeth Smart, her father Ed Smart, and author Laura Morton published a book titled Bringing Elizabeth Home: A Journey of Faith and Hope.

6.)   There is also a CBS TV Movie called The Elizabeth Smart Story, which is based on her parents’ perspective throughout her kidnapping.

7.)   Smart supports sexual predator legislation and the AMBER alert system.

8.)   She travels around the country speaking to audiences about her journey and how she overcame the challenges of her legendary kidnapping.

9.)   In 2011, Smart founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which aims to support the Internet Crimes Against Children task force and to educate children about violent and sexual crime.
