Winter Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brown chapter.

Smack. That’s the sound the wind makes when I step outside. We are officially saying goodbye to the brisk fall weather. Winter is upon us and it has declared war. But, do you know what it is not time for? Shapeless puffy coats. Just because your fingertips are freezing doesn’t mean you can rock your body shape. You can stay warm and still look like you stepped out of a holiday postcard.

The first step? Identifying and owning your body shape. Everyone is not shaped the same, which means you need a coat that complements your unique stature.

Curvy

The number one rule is to add a belt to that winter coat. The belt will help accentuate your waist so you aren’t drowning in all that fabric. Look for coats that have a peplum shape or jackets that have adjustable strings to pull in fabric towards the middle. Hello hourglass heaven!

Pear Shaped

I’m partial to this body type because I am a proud member of the pear shaped club. I have hips for days and I rock it proudly. Many fashion magazines attempt to “hide” our lower half by putting an excessive amount of fabric around our rear ends. But, as I emphasized in the beginning, I am all about owning whatever body shape you are. So, I believe that it is best to look for coats the graze and outline our lower half. Look for coats that leave about an inch or two between your hips and the fabric.

Apple Shaped

If you are repping this team, the trick is to find a coat that grazes over your curvier parts towards the middle. Look for a longer coat that goes to down to your knees. Not only will you be super warm, you will look super fabulous and elegant.

Banana Shape

B-a-n-a-n-a-s! Play some Gwen Stefani in the morning before you wake up and I will guarantee you will have an awesome day. If you have a body shape is straight all around, it is essential to find a coat that really accentuates different parts of your body. Look for coats with an emphasized waist and flared bottom.
