Somehow, we’re already halfway through November — I can’t believe the semester is wrapping up so soon! Although I’m dreading the finals cram (and just ended the second batch of midterms), one thing I love about this time of year is formals! I’ve recently been seeing an influx of posts as several groups on campus have their formal events. Personal plug: Delta Gamma just had ours last Friday!

I’m definitely biased, but one of my favorite trends recently has been silk. Vogue describes silk as “minimum effort, maximum impact,” and I couldn’t agree more. A silk piece is such an easy way to elevate any outfit, and dresses in this fabric feel incredibly comfortable and timeless. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next formal event, the following brands are a great place to check out.

Reformation

Starting with a classic, Reformation has some beautiful pieces that offer both style and sustainability.

The Jeany Silk Dress is a fitted halter neckline piece with a low tie back. I wore the short version recently and really loved how the “Black Bean” color photographed with flash!

The Frankie Silk Dress has a straight neckline and spaghetti straps. I’ve had my eye on the seasonal shade “Lyric,” which is a beautiful dark floral, but I imagine “Porcelain” would be especially lovely for a spring event.

The cowl neckline on the Anaiis Silk Dress is very classy. If you have a fancy holiday event coming up, the shade “Forest” would be both festive and elegant!

Net-A-Porter

If you’re looking to invest in a luxury piece, Net-A-Porter has some great options.

Nili Lotan’s Cami Silk-Satin Gown in “Claret” feels perfect for a winter formal. If you’re looking for a similar piece at a more reasonable price point, Quince’s Silk Maxi Slip Dress comes in a few gorgeous shades, including “Wine Tasting Red.”

The Anine Bing Laurel Silk-Blend Satin Gown isn’t 100% silk, but carries a similar shine. The cross-back tie is flattering and the deep neckline is perfect for someone looking for a slightly more sensual piece.

Serenity

Serenity has some beautiful pieces that I think would be perfect for any dressy occasion.

The Carolyn Dress has several color variations, but all are incredibly versatile and chic. I really love this pearly champagne shade, which is also 100% heavy-weight double-faced silk satin.

The Devon Dress has a gorgeous low back which feels luxurious and slightly sultry.

I’ve been loving halter necks recently, and the Deniz Dress exemplifies why: if you’re looking for a slightly more modest cut for the chest, this might be the perfect dress for you.

If you’re looking for a slip dress, the Zoe Dress is a slightly more understated yet excellent pick.

Secondhand Selections

Shopping secondhand is an excellent way to reduce waste and save some money. My close friend recently bought her formal dress off Depop, and it’s a gorgeous staple. Some other places to check out include Ebay and Poshmark. Check out some ideas on places to thrift in Providence here! It’s also great to borrow from a friend.

Happy formal season!
