It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Well, almost. For Brown University students, finals still loom large in the coming weeks, meaning hours of our days are spent cramming for exams or researching papers and projects. This work can often seem daunting, stressful, and incredibly dull.

However, these demanding tasks can be more enjoyable with a simple mindset and atmospheric changes. Here my go-to study tips that always get me through the finals season.

Dress to impress

For me, clothing plays a big role in romanticizing my studies. I view romanticization as idealizing a situation by envisioning a more appealing atmosphere and placing myself as a character within that atmosphere — and every character needs a costume.

I embrace the mantra “fake it ‘til you make it.” To me, this translates to my appearance; if I look put together and productive, I will be. So when my school life is particularly daunting and overwhelming, I like to do my hair and makeup and select outfits that make me feel productive and composed, ditching my sweats and sweatshirts for dressier sweaters and jeans – clothes that are still comfortable but look polished. This puts me in a better mental headspace to get my work done and makes the study process more fun!

Find a cozy study atmosphere, or make one at home

The atmosphere is everything for a good study session. I really enjoy an ambiance that feels cozy and quieter but less tense than a library. Providence has many great coffee shops that create great studying environments. Starbucks in Wayland or Coffee Connection in downtown Providence are two of my favourite options. They are more removed from restaurants and spaces directly on campus, which eliminates distraction, and both are about a 15-minute walk from campus.

If leaving campus seems like a difficult task, there are numerous ways to romanticize your home environment. I set the study mood in my dorm by lighting a scented candle on my desk, opting for warm, dim lighting, and bringing out some cozy blankets.

Set the mood with music

Music or background noise can be great tools when I’m romanticizing a study session, as they quiet the world around me and help me focus on pressing tasks. Youtube and Spotify have several playlists already curated to suit different study moods and needs, from piano to white noise.

I favor songs that make me feel calm and comfortable when I choose music. In December, this might be Christmas carols or classical music. I also love some of the ambient noise sounds that Spotify and Youtube offer; rain sounds always create a calming atmosphere.

Good luck!
