5 Spring Activities on College Hill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brown chapter.

After many months of snow, sleet, gray days, and whipping winds, it seems like spring is finally upon us in Providence. And while COVID has sidelined many of the usual festivities,  like spring sports and the beloved Spring Weekend, campus will undoubtedly be buzzing with energy once the weather warms up. The first time the weather hits 70 degrees and the sun shines brightly, get ready to see everyone you know on the Main Green, probably wearing their best outfit (sans jacket, of course). Even in a very abnormal school year, there are so many things to look forward to during springtime at Brown. Here are some highlights!

  1. Studying outside. Some of my favorite days at Brown during my freshman year were the days leading up to our eventual evacuation pre-pandemic. The weather was perfect for afternoons spent doing homework (despite the low productivity) on the green, outside the Watson, or even at the tables near Blue State. Getting out of my dorm or the confines of SciLi did wonders for my mood—and, I’m guessing, my vitamin D deficiency as well. Now that the snow has melted (hopefully for good) and the temperatures are rising, it is likely that many students on campus will emerge from dorms more regularly and maybe even take their Zoom classes from outside!

  2. Outdoor exercise. Personally, I’ve found working out inside with a mask next to impossible. As someone who frequented the Nelson pre-COVID, I’ve had to get crafty with winter workouts. Whether I layer up and brave the chilly weather or watch Youtube videos in my dorm, the spring weather will undoubtedly make me more motivated to do an outdoor workout. Brown has opened up the practice fields for both club sports and open hours, so that’s a great resource for a small pod of friends looking for an activity. Additionally, both India Point Park/East Bay Bike Path and Blackstone Boulevard offer great running routes for those of us (myself included)just looking for an easy jog.

  3. Trying new restaurants! Since indoor dining is often labeled as a breeding ground for COVID transmission, many have been wary to eat out during the winter months. However, with improving conditions, many local restaurants will likely be eager to offer outdoor dining as an option. Providence is a city full of great food, and eating outside is not only a safe and fun activity, but also supports a local business at the same time. I’m planning to try Mare Rooftop and Dolores on Hope Street in the next few weeks!

  4. Exploring Rhode Island. Since COVID guidelines prohibit out-of-state travel, the end of this semester offers the perfect opportunity to explore the state of Rhode Island. While beach weather won’t be here for another 3 months, there are plenty of picturesque beaches, hiking trails, and fun day trips just a short distance from campus. Try out Lincoln Woods State Park for a nature walk or the beach in Barrington for a glimpse at the ocean!

  5. Socializing safely. Even though we have been socializing in small groups this semester, the options are endless for a COVID-safe hangout now that the weather is warmer. Whether going for a walk, grabbing a coffee, or having a meal, the ability to do so outdoors allows for ease in social distancing and deters the spread of the virus. I’m sure that Ratty meals will taste much better when they are eaten as a part of a picnic on the green!
