10 Fun Cold Weather Activities for the Homebody and Outdoor Enthusiast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brown chapter.

As the weather gets cooler, it can be difficult to find activities to do when all you really want is to bundle up indoors. While hunkering down inside could be fun for a bit, it can get boring pretty fast! Whether you like getting outdoors, busting out some creativity, or hosting a party, below are 10 ideas for things to do as the temperatures drop.

Ice Skating

Lace up the skates and have some fun on the ice this season. Ice skating in Providence starts early December at the Providence Rink downtown. Don’t forget to grab a hot chocolate!

Check out Local Coffee Shops

Need a change of scenery from the library or dorm room? Explore a local coffee shop nearby and hunker down with your work and the latest seasonal latte or baked good. Providence has a plethora of options, from Coffee Exchange to Small Format.

Paint or Pottery Class

Tap into your inner creativity at a local painting or pottery class this season! Grab your friends and create a work of art that you could turn into a holiday gift or simply keep for yourself. In Providence, try Muse PaintBar for a paint night or Mudstone Studios for a pottery class.

Bundle up for a Hike

Enjoy the outdoors no matter the weather? Grab a warm jacket and hit the trails to check out fall foliage or winter scenery. In Providence, check out India Point Park or Temple View Trail.

Cookie Decorating Party

There are few things better than freshly baked cookies during the holiday season. Host a cookie decorating party with your friends. You just need some cookies to decorate, icing, sprinkles, and a bit of creativity. Try this recipe for the perfect decorating cookies.

Volunteer

This time of year, you may be looking for ways to give back. From animal shelters to assisted living centers, there are plenty of ways to get involved in your local community. In Providence, Sojourner House offers opportunities at their Advocacy and Resource Center and Providence Animal Rescue League allows you to volunteer with pets in their shelter.

Movie Marathon

If you find yourself on a chilly weekend with no plans, bundle up in some blankets, pop some popcorn, and start a movie marathon. Whether it’s any of the Harry Potter movies, Twilight, or your favorite holiday movie, gather your friends and take the weekend to indulge in your favorite nostalgic movies.

Museum

Love wandering through halls of captivating artwork? Is Degas and Monet on your screensaver? Spend the day at a local museum. In Providence, the RISD Museum offers a convenient choice; or take the train up to Boston for the Museum of Fine Arts or Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Do a Winter Photo Shoot

Going through a phase with your digital camera? Whether you want to feature the natural reds and golds of the Fall foliage or the snowy Winter landscape, gather some friends and channel your inner photographer into pictures you will want to hang up on your wall or post on your Instagram.

Spa Night

Self care can seem indulgent and unnecessary, but treating yourself to little luxuries can be really important for self-worth and confidence. Take a night for yourself: do your nails, put on a face mask, take a nice long shower or bath. Whatever makes you feel pampered.
