The Myres – Briggs Type Indicator is a self – inventory personality test based on Carl Jung’s theories of personality types. The questionnaire is designed to measure how people perceive the world and make decisions. Created in the 1940’s by Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Myres – Briggs, the MBTI is one of the most popular psychological instruments used today. It is often used in team – building exercises, recruitment, self – development and career counseling. A number of approximations of the test are available online for free.

The Letters!

Extroversion/Introversion: Extroverts derive energy from the outside world and people. Introverts are energized from internal thoughts and ideas.

Sensing/Intuition: Sensing dominant types prefer to perceive things through sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell, while intuition dominant types are drawn to abstract thinking.

Thinking/Feeling: The third scale measures how people use judgment. Thinking types rely on logic to judge the world. Feeling types base their judgment on the emotions a decision will elicit.

Judging/Perceiving: Judging dominant types are more methodical and results – oriented, whereas perceiving dominant personalities are good multitaskers and are flexible.
