Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is a time to exchange greeting cards and gifts with loved ones. Possible origins, and some history:

Lupercalia Festival

  • February 15th, the festival celebrated coming of spring in the Roman calender, have several rites connect to fertility. The festival itself transformed and it spread to both France and Britain. 

Christian Martyr

  • Early times, the Christian church had at least two saints named Valentine. This specific person, who secretly married young couples, was executed on February 14th about around the year 269 A.D..

Cupid, also known as Amor (Roman god), or Eros (Greek mythology), is a holiday symbol that billions of people in the world are aware of.

1415

  • A French duke, was imprisoned by the British, was the first to send love poetry on Valentine’s Day.

 

1800’s

  • Had the very first commercial cards from England in the early 1800’s. The precise year of 1847, had the fist U.S. manufacturer to deliver the Valentine’s Day cards to all.

 

1900’s

  • With a huge mass-production of products, a whole lot was marketed to the newly emerging middle class for all of them to enjoy the Valentine’s Day holiday.
