As the temperature seizes to drop and hot chocolate season rolls around the corner, those of us who are cosy-inclined will be happy to hear the countless ways we can be snug yet fashionable this winter season. With the opportunity to layer clothing, being stylish whilst staying warm is a lot easier than you think. Explore the various trends and timeless pieces that will allow us to feel bundled up whilst avoiding looking overstuffed and bulky. I do love the puffy marshmallows that float around my hot cocoa; however, I do not want to end up looking like one this winter season!

Building your Base

Starting with the non-negotiables that everyone needs this coming season. These basics will help you find a balance between practicality and aesthetics. First, good quality thermals that are insulating but breathable will be your saviour during these cold months. Not only are they functional, but they can be easily found in different colours and patterns that can help spice up your outfit when layered. Similarly, you will find that cardigans, turtlenecks and woolly sweaters will be your best friend when it comes to incorporating fun layering pieces. Knitwear has always been a timeless option, especially because of the comfort they bring, undoubtedly helping you form the foundation of your outfit.

The Art of Layering

Now how do we go about styling these basic pieces? The simple answer being layers upon layers! Layering has always been a fabulous way to create dimension and add texture to an outfit to make it more interesting, and the wintertime creates a great opportunity for this. The good news is that we can reinvent outfits using pieces we already own by trying out different combinations. A woolly sweater or vest can be worn over a collard button-up, colourful contrasting cardigans can be layered on top of one another, a funky patterned turtleneck can be worn under any pairing jacket… and the list goes on! The links above will take you to some of my favourite fashion influencers who have utilised layering in numerous playful ways.

Overwhelmed by the amount of styling options? I find that opting for moody seasonal colours such as maroon, deep browns and black are a chic choice for throwing together a coordinating outfit. The same principles with layering still apply; you can’t go wrong with Uniqlo’s heat tech and investing in a top-knotch knit. All of these basics are ultimately the timeless essentials that cannot be ignored. Instead of consuming pieces that will only remain ‘trendy’ for 2025, these can be reused as a closet staple or even used as transitional pieces in the autumn and spring.

The Bottom Half

Try not to overthink styling this portion of the outfit. A good pair of worn-in dark washed jeans tend to do the trick, with oversized trousers being the more popular silhouette this season. Go baggy or go home! This also creates the perfect opportunity for those of us whose legs get extra cold, as wearing tights or thermal leggings underneath might just be your lifesaver. The best part being no one has to know! If you want to lean into the more feminine side; midi skirts (particularly silk ones) have also been a trendier option this season. Want to step outside your comfort zone? Combine both the jeans and the skirt! Yes – this controversial choice is quite impractical when it comes down to it but can be executed well for those of you looking for something different.

Although the season is changing, the lasting trend of the ballet flats and kitten heels have not left us. There is no doubt that they are incredibly chic, however, there is also nothing wrong with choosing the more comfortable option. A pair of sneakers or slim loafers will keep you warm as well as let you get your steps in! Still cold? Leg warmers or woolly socks are a cosy option and are a low-effort way to add texture (and looks especially cute peeking out a boot.)

Ready for Battle (i.e. Bristol’s blistering cold)

So now that you are well-equipped with the basics, it is time to choose a coverup – your weapon of choice as you venture out into the nipping cold. Finding a classic coat or jacket is arguably the most important aspect of putting together a sophisticated winter outfit. The trendy ‘trenchcoat buttoned to the top’ is trendy for a reason. With the option to expose your outfit underneath or to keep your neck warm, purchasing this coat is sounding like a ‘2 for 1’ deal! Now let’s talk textures. Faux fur and leather are great for making a statement and elevating an outfit. For outerwear, stick to neutral colours that can go on your daily rotation as they can be easily matched.

The Power of Accessorising

Now that comfort is secured, we can start thinking about how to express our own unique personal style through the fashion trends this winter. This can be achieved through various accessories that can add an extra pop of fun and character in an outfit, whilst still serving a functional purpose. Thick warm scarves are a great investment and come in bright colours and bold designs. Wrap it around your neck in different ways for a new effect each time, or even around the head – babushka style. Other head accessories that have risen in popularity include knitted bonnets, balaclavas and cashmere headbands – a guarantee to keep you warm whilst looking stylish. Another item handy to have in the winter wardrobe are belts; often being the central piece of an outfit – they can help to pull together a look.

Honourable mentions: a pair of sleek black sunnies (bonus if you want to remain incognito and look mysterious), a big slouchy bag (for all your university essentials of course!), fingerless gloves (which handily doubles as a cup insulator for your coffee.)

Now that I have taken you from head to toe with a full-proof guide on how to survive this winter whilst being on trend, you are ready and well-equipped with the fashion knowledge to dress elegantly and still be warm. Don’t be afraid to experiment with unconventional accessories and colourful patterns, as there is a chance they might just cure that bit of seasonal depression!
