Our Guide to Bristol’s Best Dates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

So Valentine’s Day has come and gone, ill-advised New Year’s Eve hook-ups have been long forgotten, and we’re almost a quarter of the way through the year already! It may be cold outside, but our compilation of the best dates that Bristol has to offer will leave you warm and glowing. So whether you fancy a romantic night with your other half, or a first meet-up with that guy you had a drunken moment with at Lounge, we have the perfect idea for you!

Rocotillos and Brandon Hill

Let’s be honest, we all quite enjoy the fact that our university city is the home of Skins. For an original date idea, why not embark upon a mini-tour of some iconic locations — starting with the delicious milkshakes at Rocotillos! My personal favourite is Oreo, but there are several flavours, and you can even add a shot of alcohol if you’re in need of some Dutch courage! Afterwards, head up to that bench in Brandon Hill, the park that overlooks the whole of Bristol. Here’s hoping that the stunning views bring out the Cassie and Sid in you and your date.

Cori Tap and the Clifton Suspension Bridge

For a more authentically Bristolian experience, start your evening at the Cori Tap, a charming wooden pub that specialises in the local favourite: cider. Get to know one another over a few, surprisingly potent, Exhibitions. (There is also live music on Tuesdays and Sundays, but make sure to arrive early if you want a seat!) Walk it off with a romantic stroll to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a beautiful feat of engineering that looks especially spectacular at night.

The Hippodrome

For something a little more cultured, why not take your date to the theatre? You can find some good deals if you book early enough, and with classics such as Dirty Dancing coming up in the next month (15th March- 5th April), your date is sure to be romantic! Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants on the Harbourside, or if you’re seeing a matinee, treat yourselves to a posh afternoon tea at the Royal Marriott on College Green.

Hausbar

This is the one to plump for if you want to impress! Dress smartly, and head to the top of Whiteladies with your date in tow. Hausbar can be found beneath Rajpoot, an Indian restaurant. There’s no door handle, but if you ring the doorbell, you will be greeted shortly by one of the wonderful barmen. The cocktails are delicious, and the atmosphere is classy and intimate. Open until 2 a.m., prepare to book ahead if you’re going on a Friday or Saturday.

The Cowshed

This gorgeous restaurant has recently re-opened its doors following a massive refurbishment, which has seen it triple in size. Not one for the veggies, the Cowshed’s specialty is “Steak on Stone,” which you cook yourself on a sizzling hot lava rock. It’ll be pricey, so take someone for a special occasion, or better yet, find a rich and generous date!

If you’re still in austerity mode — or just really don’t like your date — Jason Donervan’s does a great “large cheesy chips” for £3. These are best shared on a wooden bench, surrounded by drunken revellers and thieving pigeons. Enjoy!
