The Met Gala 2016: Best Dressed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

Last night, one of the biggest fashion events on the calendar took place: The Met Gala.

The glamorous evening is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, with hundreds of A-List celebrities attending. It is one of the most scrutinised red-carpets, along with the Oscars, with each year having a different dress-code theme. This year, it was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

But who stood out?

Beyonce in Givenchy

All eyes were on Beyoncé after the recent release of Lemonade. Interestingly, she turned up without Jay-Z, which further fuelled the rumours of infidelity sparked by the songs in her sixth studio album. In terms of her outfit, Bey’s peach latex dress with 3-D pearl detail was mocked online as viewers saw resemblance between the ensemble and lyrics to her song “Anger”:

“I can wear her skin over mine. Her hair over mine. Her hands as gloves. Her teeth as confetti.”

One meme said:

“She’s wearing Becky’s skin. The accents on her dress are teeth as confetti… I get it Bey.”

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein

Always a vision, Lupita’s stunning mermaid-like gown rippled to the floor like sea foam. However, the sequined green metallic dress was outshone by her towering hair.

Kendall Jenner in Versace

One of the many supermodels in attendance last night, Kendall wore a gold, blue and white cut out dress. Whilst sisters Kim and Kylie opted for similarly unoriginal silver Balmain pieces, Kendall once again showed that she doesn’t blindly follow the Kardashian klan.

Alexa Chung in Thakoon

Alexa’s sequined trouser suit placed her in a different league to the other celebrities. Different, modern and perfectly tailored, the slightly cropped trouser and plunging neck-line looked fantastic with the simple strappy heel.

 Zendaya in Michael Kors

In a surprising red-carpet transformation, Zendaya proved that she’s the only person on Earth that actually looks good with a bowl haircut. Her metallic dress resembled caramel chainmail, with the asymmetrical sleeve adding an elegant touch.

Bella Hadid in Givenchy

Model Bella Hadid wore a black strapless gown that feathered out at the bottom to reveal open toed thigh high boots. Bella was accompanied by her boyfriend, the Weeknd, who wore a similarly chic black suit.

Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

Reminiscent of a night sky, Nicole Kidman’s cosmic dress was beautifully detailed. Complete with a sheer cape, she looked every part the enchantress.

Clare Danes in Zac Posen

The person to take the theme to its extremity was Clare, who wore a glow in the dark dress. Looking like a real-life Cinderella, Clare fully embraced the technological side of the dress code and looked unforgettable.
