Alexa Chung is of today’s most popular British fashion icons, having won the British Style Award four times and frequently topping the best-dressed lists. Her sophisticated but practical attire shows that the winter weather doesn’t have to stop you from stepping out in style.

The 31 year old model, spotted near her home in New York City, wore a double breasted black pea coat by Blk Dnm. Thanks to the oversized fit the coat is rather casual, making it a great wardrobe essential. Alexa has previously worn the same coat with a simple dress and black tights as well as with tailored shorts and a shirt on a night out, demonstrating its versatility.

Love it or hate it, the cape trend is here to stay this winter. Alexa successfully avoided looking like Batman due to the colourful checked pattern on hers, which is by Burberry. The warm mustard, red and blue nicely compliment the black coat, which could otherwise look plain and dull. She created the perfect balance between cosy and chic by layering items, which is the best way to avoid being too hot or cold throughout the day at Uni.

Alexa showed off her distinct personal style by mixing prints, a great way to add individuality to an outfit. In contrast to the design on the cape, she chose to wear leopard print ankle boots from Rag and Bone. These boots are amazing for any occasion; they can be worn in the day due to their small heel but also dressed up in the evening with a dress or skirt.

The classic grey skinny jeans tied everything together; Alexa’s simple ones are by 7 For All Mankind. She accessorised with a small leather Marc Cross bag (and a white carrier bag, possibly containing her lunch, but that’s probably not part of the look).

To follow in Alexa’s footsteps, here are a few lookalike items for less:

This is lovely cape is from Missguided for £22.99
And these bad boys are from New Look, £18.50
