Her Campus Meets CLICENDALES

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

What do you get if you cross 190 medical students, the O2 Academy, and a good cause? Why, the CLICENDALES, of course! This year, the CLICENDALES are back bigger and better than ever. With an action-packed show of 15 dances (including very cheeky half and full (!) nudity burlesque numbers) and fun that extends through until the early hours, Bristol University’s medical students promise one of the best nights of the year. This year’s theme is “Journey Through the Ages,” so expect amazing costumes, tongue-in-cheek routines, and some bare bodies! Tickets for the whole night are only £12, with all profits going to charity, so get yourself down to the O2 on Saturday 5th March!

(Trying to booty pop)

If you don’t already know, the CLICENDALES are a student-run charity made up of medical students who, every year, put on an extravaganza of dance and strip-tease in aid of CLIC Sargent, a Bristol-based support centre for children and their families who are battling cancer. Already, CLIC has so far raised over £100,000 for the centre and, this year, are aiming for an all-time high of £20,000 – the cost of one nurse for the whole year. As well as providing clinical and practical support, CLIC Sargent also cover financial and emotional help, including grants, “Home from Home” accommodation near specialist hospitals, and short breaks away for families. With 10 people diagnosed with cancer every day, it is safe to say that CLIC Sargent is an invaluable source of help for many young people across Bristol who face cancer.

So, with all the facts covered, I was tempted to get a closer look at what it was like to be a CLICENDALE. Little did I know that closer look meant a whole lot of Justin Bieber, booty-popping, and my own starring role centre stage! On Saturday, at 4pm, I ventured along to the Uni gym to catch a sneak peek at one of their practices and have a little go myself. I was a bit nervous before I arrived (and seriously wondered why on earth I had chosen to wear a denim skirt ?!) but, in all honesty, it was so much fun!  I’m still not ready to give up the day job to join the Moulin Rouge, but by the end, I could definitely see why the CLICENDALES is due to sell out this weekend. If every dance is promised to be as energetic and hilarious as this one, then it’s going to be an amazing night. The routine that I learnt was from the 4th Year medics, who, wanting to do something different with the theme, opted to re-create Bieber’s absolute banger “Sorry,” making a joke at how 4th Years are always so nervous and apologetic to their busy colleagues when on their placement. After a quick 15 minutes learning the moves, I was ready to showcase my very own debut performance! So, without further ado, I introduce you to the CLICENDALES… and me.

Are you a medical student? Fancy joining CLICENDALES next year? In addition to raising money for charity, being a CLIC dancer is incredibly fun for all those involved as it gives medical students a huge social network away from their studies. Perfect for meeting others and sharing study tips, or just expanding your friendships across the full 5 years, CLICENDALES is a great getaway from the lecture theatre and the library in the Spring Term. With most members re-joining every year, it is an amazing social hub for one of the busiest university courses.
