Campus Celebs: Sarah Manuel and Talia Goldman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

This week we spoke to Sarah Manuel and Talia Goldman, two of the organisers for Bristol Pink Week. Here’s what they told us..

So, what is Bristol Pink Week all about?

Sarah: It’s a week of fun and engaging activities from the 23rd to 25th March in order to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. The facts speak for themselves about breast cancer: around 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. That’s one person every 10 minutes. So we feel it’s really important to raise the awareness amongst Bristol students and encourage everyone to get involved to help the cause.

Talia: We are also teaming up with another charity called ‘CoppaFeel’ who are concentrating on stamping out late detection and encouraging young women to check themselves every month as it’s something that a lot of young people wouldn’t necessarily think to do. They have a really great service you can sign up to where they will send you a text reminder every month.

What are the events that will be taking place next week?

Sarah: On Monday we are teaming up with varsity and then we will be heading to Bunker for a special varsity pink week club night. Then, on Tuesday we will be down at the Wills Memorial Building for a talk by Professor Paraskeva, head of the celular molecular medicine school, who will be discussing the advancements in cancers. There will also be a presentation by CoppaFeel and a raffle with lots of great prizes.

Talia: On Wednesday it’s wear pink, think pink day so we are encouraging everyone to wear as much pink as they can! We will also be holding a bake and smoothie sale with amazing donations from Violet and Green smoothies, Healthy Lily Bee, Loopy Food and Mini me. There will lots of delicious treats available.

How regularly should women be checking themselves for lumps?

Talia: CoppaFeel suggest once a month and it’s something which won’t take long to do. It’s a good idea to do it when you’re lying down and relaxed, perhaps in the bath. It’s a really great way to move towards early prevention of breast cancer.

Her Campus also spoke to rugby club captain, Charlie Esam, to tell us about how Varsity will be getting involved..

Charlie: To show our support for the cause, we have got the pink ribbon printed on all of our rugby tops. We all feel that this is such an important cause as people tend to forget that 350 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year as well. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be supporting the cause at Varsity on Monday and also at Bunker afterwards. You can get your Varsity tickets from sellers who will be around Woodland Road and the libraries.

All of us at Her Campus believe that this is a really great cause to support so make sure that you will be getting involved next week and helping to raise awarness for breast cancer. Think pink for Bristol Pink Week!
