If you are a keen bruncher (and let’s be honest, who isn’t a keen bruncher), then this week’s hidden gem will not disappoint.Â
Bakers & Co is located on Gloucester Road, just next door to the beloved Atomic Burger. In contrast to the somewhat edgy exterior of the burger joint, Bakers & Co is fresh and clean and altogether inviting. Enticed by the website’s extremely appetising photo gallery – playing on the Instagram generation – I made a pilgrimage here last Saturday morning. I arrived to find a bustling cafĂ©, fronted by a counter that overflowed with cake, and an open kitchen beyond where I could see my future eggs. Ideal.
The cafĂ© claims its inspiration from travels around the globe, in particular the eateries of San Francisco. With items on the menu like ‘Overnight roast pork shoulder brioche bun, local leaves & apple jam’ and ‘Beetroot cured Devonshire river trout, courgette fritter, poached eggs, sour cream, lime & chilli’ they have brought brunch to a whole new level. My eyes have been opened, and I’m never going back. This is brunch at its best – you can even order a side of extra poached egg or smashed avocado on sourdough. Swoon.
My choice though? I couldn’t say no to Bakers & Co’s signature dish of “Huevos Rancheros”. A little too much fun the night before had left me in serious need of comfort food, and I was greeted by a warming hug in the form of slow cooked pinto beans, salsa and fried eggs. Thank you Mexico, this was one happy customer.Â
With prices hitting between ÂŁ8 and ÂŁ10 a trip to Spoons may seem more appealing to your student pocket… But trust me on this one, you won’t regret it! Splash out, or simply raid the cake stand and treat your sweet tooth to a sticky bun.Â
The menu is seasonal so head to their website to see what’s cooking at the moment, http://bakersbristol.co.uk.
