Black History Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

So unfortunately Trump is our president or whatever but on a brighter note it’s February ! But it’s not just February is black history month. My favorite month beside my birthday. So what presidents day so what Valentine’s day. Black history, every black person’s history. All the milestones we were told we couldn’t do and did it anyway.

Back in elementary it was such a big thing we talk about Dr. King and Malcolm X and Harriet Tubman and Thurgood Marshall and George Washington Carver( and don’t you forget the carver part, give him his credit !). But they only touch the surface because we can only know so much about our people before they start to wonder if we know to much.As we get older Black History month in’t even part of cirriculum anymore. In fact it’s only talk of Valentine’s day and who you get down with and if we get off on president’s day. We don’t even think much about.

Black history Month is the celebration of Blackness. The darker the berry the richer the roots. The celebration of thick kiny hair and the art of taming it. That big nigga nose they always shame us for. Our endless shades from albino to midnight black. From Black American to Black African and all over the globe. Honoring our thick thighs and large asses that they used to put us on display for. Our large bodies that make us terrifying to others. We come in all forms. Our athletes, performers ,artists, chefs, geniuses, the wealthy. We are and can be whatever we dream. Black is just like anyone else and yes that means gays and mental illness too.

We are still black even with Trump in office. We are still black with police brutality and racial profiling having us on our toes. Black lives through all troubling times. Black is divine , black is diamonds and pearls. With much self hate going on in the community black is beautiful. We forget this too often but it’s not a lie. Love the thick lips others pay for. Love the body they pay for. Love the skin the sun kissed over and over again to make you. You are a Queen. Wear your crown high and claim your thrown. Isn’t this why they go to African and shoot off our noses and paint over our truth?. Know your worth and love yourself. It’s Black History Month and I couldn’t be more excited. Happy Black History Month y’all !
