Yogurt: Nutrition tips and cooking tricks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.
Yogurt is a great way to start your day! Packed with protein, calcium, probiotics and other nutrients this natural dairy food can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Eating it plain is the first step, however you can also add some low fat granola, fruit or honey to add some texture and taste to plain versions. My personal favorite is Chobani because it’s Greek, has a thick and creamy texture, comes in a variety of flavors, and has high protein and low fat content. Chobani was also a leading sponsor for this year’s Olympics and this article explains why it makes for a great Olympic snack.

Here is a guide to important Nutrition Facts to look out for when purchasing yogurt:

Yogurt has many other useful purposes. Try plain Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream on your Mexican dishes like quesadilla or taco toppings, in casseroles or spinach and artichoke dips, even in mashed potatoes!

Yogurt is also key ingredient in smoothies. Try these easy steps to make a delicious fruit smoothie!

Basic steps of Smoothie making:
1. Prepare your blender, large glass and possible some paper towels!
2. Choose your yogurt: Greek, plain, vanilla, fruit flavored?
3. Choose your fruit: fresh vs frozen; berries, mango, banana, etc.
4. If you like thick, cold smoothies, add a few ice cubes or choose frozen fruit.
If you like more liquid smoothies, add 100% fruit juice like cranberry, pomegranate, blueberry or orange.
5. Blend, pour and enjoy!
