Tips for Sleeping Well

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Anyone who owns a cell phone knows that it functions only when the battery is charged. Likewise, the only way that you can fully function is if you recharge, rejuvenate, and reenergize. And what’s the best way to do this? By getting a good night’s sleep! College is often a breeding ground for unhealthy habits – a huge one being overlooking sleep. Although we like to think we’re invincible and can totally balance our day-to-day lives with or without enough sleep, the reality is that sleep is absolutely essential. In many cases, people truly want to get enough sleep but simply can’t find the time or can’t seem to get a restful night’s sleep. With inspiration from Arianna Huffington’s #SleepRevolution, I’ve put together some of my top tips for getting your Z’s!

1. Say “goodnight” to your technology

Did you just cringe a little? The very idea of putting away phones or logging out of your Facebook account can be quite daunting – but trust me, it’s worth it! Studies have shown that shutting off devices dramatically improves the course of your rest and helps you fall asleep faster and easier.

2. Journaling and/or reading

Aside from being wonderful stress-relieving activities, both reading and journaling are excellent methods for falling soundly asleep. They quiet your mind, provide an outlet for those anxious thoughts and feelings left over from the day, and signal to your brain that it’s time for sleep. I recommend keeping a gratitude journal and each night recording a few things that you feel grateful for. It concludes the day on a positive, happy note and sets the tone for the next day!

3. Eat calming foods

There are certain foods that contain sleep-inducing enzymes. Rather than snacking on sugar-filled treats that “energize” your body, perhaps try one of these midnight soothers: bananas, oats, cherries, warm milk, or almonds.

4. Drink a nice hot cup of chamomile tea

Chamomile acts as a natural, mild tranquilizer. Drinking some warm tea is very comforting and the perfect way to end the day.

5. Create a nighttime routine

I really believe that rituals make it possible for us to feel comfortable regardless of our surroundings or environment. Having a consistent nighttime routine will help you feel comfortable and therefore sleep easier and better.

Try integrating the suggestions above into your nightly routine and a good night’s sleep is just around the corner.

Sleep tight . . .
