Rainy Day Activities to Brighten Up Any Dreary Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or maybe holed up in your room avoiding responsibilities) for the past week, you know that we have been experiencing a ton of rain here in the Greater Boston area. Whether you love or hate these rainy days, here are a few activities you can do when the forecast calls for showers.

1. One word: NETFLIX (or Hulu, Xfinity…any TV watching medium will do!)

Now this may seem simple and self-explanatory, but nothing beats curling up with a movie or TV show on a cold and rainy day. So go ahead and throw on your coziest sweats, put on your fuzzy socks, and wrap yourself up in some blankets with a mug of your favorite hot beverage to enjoy some Netflix. Don’t deny it—you know it sounds like heaven.

2. Frolicking and puddle stomping.

Don’t laugh—I’m serious. Embrace your inner child, put on those super cute rainboots and go jump around. Just be sure to wear warm clothes (especially warm socks) and run right back your dorm after to take a long hot shower. It many be chilly out there, but the lighthearted fun will make you happy and relaxed on these sometimes dreary days. If anything else, think of the super cute and artsy Insta opportunities.

3. Do some baking with friends.

You know those times when you are scrolling through Buzzfeed and you see all that super delicious and cool looking food they post? Well, why not attempt to make one of those recipes? Lazy raining days are the perfect time to warm up in the kitchen while attempting to create one of these Oreo recipes or one of these ridiculously decadent-looking funfetti recipes. These and more yummy treats are within your reach via the Buzzfeed food section.

4. Go to the movies.

Now I know I just suggested getting comfy and watching movies in your dorm, but if you feel the need to venture off campus and still indulge in some screen time, a movie theater is a great rainy day option. We have a movie theater right in Waltham that screens lots of new releases. If you are really feeling adventurous and in the mood to spoil yourself, you can journey into the Chestnut Hill area of Newton to visit the Showcase Superlux movie theater. This is a smaller theater and is more expensive, but you sit in super comfy reclining chairs and waiters bring you everything from popcorn to any item off of the neighboring restaurants menu. How cool is that?!? I would recommend buying tickets online in advance, since these small theaters tend to fill up quickly.

5. Explore a museum.

Finally, if you are really feeling adventuresome you can journey into Boston to visit one of the many incredible museums we have in the city. My personal favorite museum to explore on a rainy day is the Museum of Science. There are a lot of really interesting and cool activities to do and exhibits to view, including a new one about the science behind Pixar! While there are many elements of the museum designed for children, it really is fun and informative for all ages! There are also many shows, including an IMAX theater and a planetarium. Be sure to come back on a nice day too and take a Duck Tour—you cannot say you’ve lived in this area without experiencing this iconic tradition! For more information on this museum click here.
