Now that fall is officially here and the weather is finally cooling down, you might find yourself reaching for that blessedly warm pumpkin spice latte every day. Next time you find yourself going for another latte or coffee, try switching to green tea instead. Before you dismiss this idea and head straight for Starbucks, check out these five reasons you might want to try a cup of green tea.

1.     Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that help keep your cells healthy. Besides healthier cells, this means healthier and clearer looking skin!

2.     Freshman fifteen anyone? Green tea can help by increasing your metabolism, which can aid in weight loss.

3.     Green tea is known to help reduce stress levels and aid in relaxation, so if you’re stressed out by a chem quiz tomorrow, try a cup of green tea.

4.     Green tea is a great coffee substitute. Most green teas contain caffeine, which will help you wake up for your first class or stay awake for late nights at the library.

5.     Green tea is also known to help reduce the risk of various health issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and possibly cancer.

Invest in a box of green tea to have in your dorm room.  Not only will it be more wallet friendly, but it will also save you the trip to Starbucks. To increase health benefits, I would recommend drinking your green tea plain, but if you can’t stomach the taste try using honey instead of sugar as a sweetener.  You can also make your own personalized latte in your dorm room.  Just add milk and honey!

I am a double major in Anthropology and International/Global Studies with a minor in Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation at Brandeis University. As a native Southern Californian, I have a born passion for avocados and an innate dread of cold weather. In my free time I love cooking (with avocados of course), drawing and writing.
Andrea is a sociology major with minors in journalism and women's and gender studies. She is currently finishing her senior year at Brandeis University. She was born and reared in Los Angeles, CA, which does mean that she is a die-hard Laker fan… Sorry Bostonians. When Andrea is not routing on her favorite basketball team, she dedicates her time to her many passions. They include reading and writing about fashion, traveling, exploring new restaurants, spending time with friends, watching reality television (she has a weak spot for Bravo), shopping, and working out.
